  • Fabulous location on the banks of the River Ouse in Bishopthorpe
  • A 10-minute drive to York city centre, with summer riverbus available
  • Restaurant, café-bar, playground, beauty salon and kayak hire on site
The name says it all here – The Riverfront is indeed in a wonderful location right on the banks of the River Ouse, on the edge of the North Yorkshire village of Bishopthorpe. This is a fabulous setting for many reasons – the lush greenery and river views take top billing, of course, but there’s also the fact that the centre of York is only about three miles away. Drive up to the city in about 10 minutes, cycle it in 20 minutes or (if you're here between April and September) catch a riverbus for a particularly scenic journey to the centre. There are other ways to enjoy that river scenery too – you can hire motor boats or kayaks on site or take walks along the riverside path. And if that all sounds like too much effort, just find a quiet spot on site and settle down with your book or connect to the wifi to send lovely pics to your pals back home. Facilities at this site have been very nicely thought out – there's a playground for the kids and a beauty salon where frazzled grownups can treat themselves to a bit of pampering. Food is easily sorted as well, with a café-bar selling breakfasts, coffees, snacks and sandwiches on site. Bosun, the main restaurant (open Thursday to Sunday), also has a full menu featuring local seasonal ingredients, steak specials, seafood dishes, Sunday lunches and kids’ options. Even the bathrooms are worth an honourable mention here too – these smart modern facilities have been stylishly decorated and kitted out with accessible facilities as well as handy extras like hairdryers.

What customers say

This tidy riverside spot's a gem for York access. New, posh loos are a highlight! Pitches are grand. Some WiFi glitches and limited dishwashing. Cafe/ferry hours vary. Cubicle vents and distant building noise noted.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (no awning, small)

Liked Everything! Gorgeous site, immaculately clean. Peaceful and oh my word; the toilets!!! It was so lovely having a shower that didnt switch off every 8 seconds! This is definitely the most luxurious campsite we have stayed on to date.

Disliked The fact we had only booked this site for 1 night! Definitely going to plan a trip back up for a couple of nights.

Liked Toilets and shower block were the best I have ever stayed at. Very pretty location.
Nice cafe on site.
Bishopsthorp is a very pretty village, co-op close by and a couple of good pubs.
On the no 11 bus route, which is 15 mins into York City centre.

Disliked Pitches are quite small.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (large, no awning)

Liked Everything about the campsite. Pitches were very smart with water on tap. Lovely location with it being a 3 to 4 mile walk into York. The toilet and shower facilities are excellent. It’s a pity the Bosun’s Restaurant wasn’t open (Thursday to Sunday) but we’ll give that a go next time around. The general upkeep of the entire site is amazing and a credit to all associated with its management and organisation.

Disliked If I had to be picky it would be the height of the clothing pegs in the shower cubicle.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (no awning, small)

Liked Small and well laid out site by the river.
Very good facilities and lots of water taps.
Cafe and seating pods by the river are great.
Chip shop in the village was very good.
Easy access to Park and Ride for York.

Disliked Bosun’s restaurant and bar only opens from Thursday to Sunday, not good for the weekday visitors.
No food at pubs in the village on a Monday and Tuesday.
Arrival was self-service from e-mail info, missed that personal touch.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (large, no awning)

Liked Loved everything. The site is beautiful and the toilets are the best and cleanest I've ever seen. Loved the coffee from the wee hut and had a great couple off pints from the restaurant sitting on the balcony watching the boats pass by. Lovely walks next time I'll bring my wee dogs.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (medium)

Liked The site is beautifully kept, very very clean.
I loved the washrooms, the water was really warm and it was so clean.
We took a return journey on the boat into York which was lovely.
It’s approximately an hour and 15 mins walk into York but it’s a very Pleasant walk.

Disliked Maybe a few more sinks to do the dishes, there’s only one sink.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely feedback Nickie! We’re delighted you enjoyed the beautifully kept site, warm washrooms, and the scenic walk into York — and it’s great to hear the boat trip added to your experience.
We appreciate your suggestion about the dishwashing facilities. While space is limited, we’ll certainly take your comments on board as we continue to look for ways to improve the guest experience.
We hope to welcome you back again soon!
