Oakhill Leisure: Plenty of space for tents -we also have rough camping fields if you want to get away from everyone

General

  • 70-acre estate including fields and woodlands
  • Large fishing lake with rudd, roach and tench
  • Perfect place to explore the Lincolnshire countryside

No word of a lie: you might land a whopper of a carp at Oakhill Leisure between Lincoln and Newark-on-Trent. For monsters of up to 35lb have been angled for at the site's six-acre fishing lake, as well as sizeable specimens of rudd, roach and tench.

If you're not fishing or if you feel like doing a victory lap after landing a massive carp, plenty is on hand to explore, as Oakhill is on a site made up of the 10-acre campsite, walking and playing fields covering 30 acres, and finally about 20 acres of woodland. Take the 20 to 30 minute circular walk around the lake and through the woodland; it and the site grounds are pretty handsome....

The accommodation part of Oakhill is on flat and well-drained grassland, bordered by trees on three sides and a hedge. Toilets, showers (new in 2019) and a washroom are in the facilities building and a play area is also on site.

But back to the fishing... You'll need a fishing licence (available at the post office) to fish at Oakhill Leisure, as well as your own equipment and bait; a small charge applies to angle on site, and you'll need to call the office in advance to book your peg. Please note that under-16s must be accompanied by an adult and that they aren't allowed to stay around the lake overnight.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 7 consecutive nights.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Group bookings of 3 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Nice and quiet even with all the children running around. If the no ball games near the caravans rule had been adhered then it would have been quieter.
Great areas to walk the dogs, wooded walks and open fields.
Warden and the assistant warden always cheerful and willing to help.
    Will definitely be back.

Really enjoyed it here. The lady that took our booking was friendly and helpful. The shower block was most excellent as were the washing up facilities. This was without doubt the best camp site I have been to yet.

    Disliked:

A group of young men shouting and laughing loudly until gone midnight, you went to sleep when they went to sleep. Not fair, but no fault of the campsite. What I didn't like was being locked in until 6:30am. The gates are locked and you are prisoner. This made me feel uneasy, what if there was a family emergency or if I just wanted to come back early. This was the only aspect I didn't like. Other than that, it's mint and I would definitely like to go back again.

From the manager...

Thank you for leaving such a lovely review we are glad you enjoyed our site so much, we are extremely proud of our facilities. I think you may be a little confused on the barrier situation the barrier that is locked is a height restriction barrier, yourselves being in a car were not restricted at all. Anyone with a taller vehicle would need to call the onsite warden in the case of emergency and the height restriction would be lifted for them. Hopefully you will visit us again in the future. Fab site. Good size but quiet and friendly. Loved the woodland walks with several interesting wood structures and paths around past the fishing lake. It was very hot so the woods were ideally with the dog. Shower facilities looked brand new and were first class. Noise rules were observed by other campers and no passing traffic. Definitely one to return too. Enjoyed the ice creams from the reception shop as well!

Perfect place to camp07/25/2021

Reviewer's country: United KingdomBarbara S.Confirmed

  • Non-electric grass tent pitch (two man)

The area is gorgeous. I really appreciated the fact that the grass was left uncut in the centre of the area, but around the perimeter(determined by the trees), the grass was cut to perfection. This ensured that all guests will camp around the perimeter, so you can be secluded enough to enjoy yourself, but still enabling you to see other guests and provide some sort of feeling of security.
I should also mention, this is the first time my partner and I went camping, and we absolutely loved it. The warm weather had a big influence, and I won't lie about it.
However, the facilities were great. The shower and toilet facilities are located in the centre of the site, just after the security gates, close to the caravan site. the walk-in showers are quite large and they also have a changing area comprised of a bench and hangers. The showers have all-around hot water and a small basket below the tap where you can put your toiletries. In the shower area sinks, bins and mirrors are available for use. On the opposite side, male and female toilets are located. All the facilities are very clean, and toilet paper is always available.
Between the toilets and the showers, there is an opened roofed area where the potable water fountains are located.
The owner is extremely nice and she makes sure to check up on each guest daily. This is very reassuring that safety measures are in place.
Lastly, fire pits are available to use on-site free of charge, which, in my opinion, is brilliant.

    Disliked:

    Nothing to complain about.

From the manager...

Wow what a great review thank you so much. Pleased you chose us for your first camping trip and it will obviously not be your last. As you say the weather always helps. We feel very lucky to have staff who care about our customers as much as we do. Hope to see you again soon.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food... bring the bike and cycle to the nearby villages of Norton Disney, Bassingham and Auborn for drinks and home-cooked Lincolnshire food in friendly well-run pubs. Evening meals recommended by the team are at the Green Man pub a mile and a half away.

Visit nearby Newark for its castle, National Civil War Centre and Newark Museum and central square with a market all day on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Food and drink are recommended here too at Oakhill Leisure's fave coffee shop Strays in Middle Gate.

The site is handy for lovely Lincoln, where you can have a look at the castle, the Medieval Bishop's Palace and the grand old cathedral: the views (and the walk to it up Steep Hill) are just a bit breathtaking...
