  • Remote and rural site in the Lincolnshire countryside
  • Home to many rescue animals including hens, pigs, geese and ducks
  • Fish at the well-stocked lake for an additional fee
What a lush site this is for holidays in the Lincolnshire countryside, whiling days away fishing, woodland walking and just lazing by the lakeside with an open book or one's very own thoughts. There are animals too… Small and family-run Sunflower Park near Gainsborough has taken in quite a few rescue animals in their time (they're a friendly and welcoming lot here), so on site you'll meet the three family pets as well as some alpacas, several ex-battery hens and their strutting cockerel. Also adopted are a family of geese, ducks, Kunekune pigs and a couple of Gloucester old spots: do make sure to say hi to all. As you might guess, this is a relaxed and amiable site, set remotely and rurally on a five-acre plot that includes paddocks, a playground, open pastureland, a private woodland walk and a well-stocked fishing lake (grab a fishing day pass for a small additional fee) exclusively for guests' use. You might reckon the park's remote rural setting makes it a wildlife haven too, and you'd reckon right: its boundaries run directly into Laughton Forest's Tuetoes Wood, a Forestry Commission nature haven for walking and cycling among the trees, and home to wildlife like deer, foxes, owls, rabbits, jays, pheasants, cuckoos, woodpeckers – all within viewable and hearing distance from your pitch. Sunflower Park has toilets, showers, a drying room, a launderette and ice pack freezing. Firepits are available for hire for the whole of guests' stays and arrive full and ready to light. Please note that due to being in a forest location and on sandy ground, you will most likely come across spiders, ants, lizards, grass snakes, beetles etc. Please only book if you are comfortable with the fact that there will be wildlife around you.

Relaxed, family-run spot with animals, playground & walks. Friendly staff, clean facilities, great for kids. Sandy pitches & animal smells noted, with a wish for updated loos. Highly recommended for families/animal fans, many plan to return.

Electric grass pitch

Liked It was our first family trip in our caravan, the handyman Jay was very helpful getting us in and set up, and our little boy (2 years) loved playing with his toys with him. The pitch was lovely and grassy, very spacious too, plenty of space for our awning and the car in front. The highlight for our little boy was the farm animals, he spent most of the day going to see the sheep and the donkeys. Lots of facilities close to our pitch, for showers and washing up. A decent sized children's play area and a barn with lots of small animals too. There is also an enclosed dog exercise area, so we were able to let our 2 dogs off lead in the mornings. Super helpful owners, very friendly. We loved every minute and will definitely return to the campsite in the future.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Relaxed site some great animals to look at

Disliked Sandy area which made it very dusty , I believe they are trying to deal with this issue shower and toilets needed some attention.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou.
Most of the site is fully renovated and regraded with work to continue on the last area this week.
We are a sandy area. The weather has been exceptional. The two combined equals dust sadly
We are awaiting new shower trays and then going to refurb the wet rooms
Animal commitments and our poor health recently have impacted on getting this work done.
That said we try to provide the best we can and are regularly compared positively to facilities other sites offer

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Did not stay, left the site

Disliked Booked XL hard standing pitch with grass 26th April staying 25th May, arrived on site around 4pm to find all these pitches were allocated to other guests who had already arrived. Site owner blamed Pitchup saying it had allowed overbooking, directed us to a grass pitch with the tents which was also taken up by tents. Asked us to then pitch up on a sand filled area which didn't appear to be an actual pitch. We decided not to stay as what we had booked was not what was being offered and asked for a refund.
Site owner refunded their part of the booking but refused to refund the booking fee element taken by Pitchup and blamed them.
Currently in dispute with Pitchup and have raised chargebacks for the transactions as both sides are failing to refund my money for a service not provided.
Pitchup blaming site owner and site owner blaming Pitchup - no responsibility been taken on either side, very poor service all around - would have expected site owner to contact us well prior to arriving to advise that the pitch had been double booked so we could make alternative arrangements but this did not happen. Very disappointing.

From the manager: Sorry you felt it necessary to provide us with such a poor review, with a number of poor rating unconnected to your issue.
Right our side of the story...
Pitchup claim that site owners have total control of pitch allocation and availability but we know this not to be true.
A few times over booking has occurred and as we are a site that goes above and beyond, rather than just fob you off we always look to accommodate.
Only a few reviews down a guy speaks highly of the fact that he arrived on the wrong date, we were full but despite it being totally his fault we facilitated a pitch for him.
You did not book an XL pitch, refer to your pitch type again please.
You were offered an hardstanding pitch but it was on the side of the site that was in full sun, on the hottest day of the year.
We identified you had two small children and suggested an alternative option, under shade which was not , as you say, a full time pitch.
You chose that area.
After setting up the adults in the party sat beside the young children who proceeded to dig and bury each other in the sand.
No wonder sand got transferred into the motor home.
When you explained you were not happy and asked for a refund we didn't quibble and simply explained that we only receive 85% of the pitch fee. The other 15% is the fee pitchup charge.
As such we explained we couldn't fully refund you because we didn't have all of your money.
You said this was fine.
We paid you in cash with a instant refund whereas we could of done a long winded electronic refund, replicating how we get paid.
Despite being unhappy you were still on site for a couple of hours before speaking with us. And after your refund you still took a while to leave
To a point that we should of asked to keep some of the refund to cover your day ticket entry.
You score us 5 for location but chose to come stay ?
Value for money and child friendliness a 1. What an insult. We offer so much for children to do and loads of additions/services that other sites dont or charge extra for.. we are an animal rescue not a business driven by profit and this is reflected in all of our pricing.
As for customer services. We offered you more than one contingency, were polite, thoughtful of your children's needs and then didn't quibble regarding the refund and repaid in cash.
Is that not good customer service??
Cleanliness...... you allowed your kids to bury themselves in sand then score us low on site cleanliness. If our facilities were not clean nor the bins emptied and litter blowing around I would accept a low mark but to score us so low on differing elements, in order to justify an appalling overall rating is just cheap and not warranted.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked This was our first blended family camp trip. Great location with enough to keep children entertained. The donkey’s were the highlight for us. Everyone was very friendly. We spent the evening using our bat detector by the fishing pond. Great value.

Disliked Investment into the welfare facilities would be beneficial with the popularity of this site.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked I booked the wrong date so they weren't expecting me when I got there. Even though they were really busy they managed to find me a pitch saving me a tongue lashing from the Mrs! The guy there was really helpful getting me and the boy set up for our first time fishing which was appreciated. Thanks guys!

Local attractions

Walkers, hikers, cyclists, energetic runners and nature spotters have Tuetoes Wood right beside Sunflower Park, the Forestry Commission-managed and publicly accessible part of vast Laughton Forest. If you're an avid animal fan, take time to get to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park just outside Doncaster, home to a menagerie of over 300 from around the world, and to The Deep at Hull, one of the biggest aquariums in the UK and a habitat for over 3000 marine critters. Going south, history buffs can get to Lincoln for 11th-century Lincoln Cathedral, the third biggest in Britain after St Paul's in London and York Minster. Lincoln Castle is also well worth a look, to gaze geekily upon one of the four original remaining copies of the Magna Carta.
