General

  • Among hills and countryside seven miles from Market Harborough
  • Wildlife haven with spectacular views and sunsets
  • Indoor communal area with seating

Base yourself at Barford Top Campsite for a peaceful adults-only stay among Leicestershire hills and countryside, or use the place as a base for day trips to London under an hour and a half away: either way, spectacular views come as standard.

Run by friendly and helpful Wendy and Maurice, Barford Top is 12 miles from the city of Leicester and seven from Market Harborough; London is an hour and a half from the latter. The site has been set up as a peaceful retreat for guests to stay in a land of spectacular sunsets, sunrises and top stargazing because of the region's low light pollution, and in a wildlife haven where you should be able to spot sparrowhawks, buzzards and rabbits.

Barford Top is right in the Leicestershire countryside with views from all its pitches over the surrounding valley and hills. It has a large entrance gate and spacious drive with plenty of room to turn, free hot water for showers, and free use of The Barn for all guests, an indoor facility with seating and a washing-up area.

We had the most romantic stay here in the Daisy Shepherds Hut. The location is peaceful and beautiful with amazing views and a gorgeous sun set at night time. The hut itself looks so cute and small from the outside but it's actually quite roomy with everything you need. We had the best time and loved every minute! The owners are lovely and recommended a few walks and local pubs. We waked to the reservoir nearby and then on to Saddington for a pub lunch there. We ordered an Indian take away to the hut in the evening and slept so well in the comfy bed. The facilities are brilliant - all very clean! With a lovely hot shower in the morning. It was such a pleasure to stay and we will definitely be coming back!

    Disliked:

It's a shame it's adults only as my two girls would love it, but appreciate that we all need some time way from the kids now and again and perhaps it wouldn't be as peaceful if kids were allowed.

Other pitches near glamping units were on a slope
Hardstanding pitches didn't seem to have the best views
Saw what we think was a red kite
    Good electric shower
Foxton Locks worth a visit (long stay car park at top of locks is cheaper and bigger than short stay at the bottom)

Quiet location with great views especially at sunset. Good local walks most of the surrounding villages have a decent pub.

Pitch was a bit tight mainly due to the next unit parking right on the line.

    Adult only site

Toilet and showers were a bit limited and likely to be busy when site full.

Very clean and peaceful, this site is immaculate owners regularly clean facilities throughout the day, I did not see a dirty bathroom facility throughout my stay and the washing up facilities are inside a communal space that is large and also spotless. The views of the sun setting are spectacular and the only real noise is the sound of cows and horses, total bliss, enjoyed my stay so much I have booked for the following Saturday for the full week, HEAVEN

    Disliked:

Nothing, could not find anything I disliked but if I was being really picky then it could have more showers, but this wasn't really a problem as the campsite doesn't have a lot of pitches and most of the caravans (Tourers) have their own bathroom facilities so never had to wait

Local attractions

No need for a long face if you fancy some horse riding while in the region: Barford Top is half a mile from the village of Mowsley where horse riding is available, and a riding school is at Market Harborough seven miles away (stick around Market Harborough afterwards for antique and boutique shopping, or go on to Lutterworth for 17th-century Stanford Hall).

From Mowsley and on foot, have a scenic wander towards Laughton Hills and then down to the Grand Union Canal towpath; follow this for another couple of miles to reach the Grade II-listed Foxton Locks, the famous landmark of 10 ascending locks and part of Leicestershire’s boating heritage for over 200 years.

The Foxton Locks Inn on Gumley Road is a good spot for a virtuous post-walk pint and a bite to eat; if you’re sticking around the locks and canal after this, there’s a country park at the top of the locks, the award-winning Foxton Canal Museum museum halfway down them, and passenger trips or boat hire along the canal.

The historic village of Kibworth (four miles in the other direction from Barford Top) was featured in Michael Wood’s BBC series on the story of England from Roman times until the end of World War II (do share that fact with the kids, they'll be thrilled). Residents have developed heritage trails around Kibworth Harcourt, Kibworth Beauchamp and Smeeton Westerby, and the village also has a golf club, cricket club and bowling.

Must see
