  • Pop-up glamping site in the 200-acre grounds of Kelmarsh Hall
  • Festival-style setup with live music and activities for all ages
  • Café and vintage bus bar on site, plus food deliveries to pitches
Missed out on the festival experience you had planned for 2020? Fear not – the festival spirit is alive and well at Carry on Kelmarsh, a pop-up site with pre-pitched tents in the grounds of Northamptonshire’s Kelmarsh Hall (a rather splendid country estate 25 minutes’ drive from Northampton). Everything here has been set up to make life safe and straightforward: tents are each pitched in a space of at least 10x10 metres, with a private toilet for each one. Beyond the pitching area there’s plenty of scope to stretch your legs around the estate’s 200 acres of lakes, woodland and formal gardens (with fishing on site and lots of wildlife to spot). And what of that festival vibe? Well, the folk that run this site have tons of experience in that side of things – they’d usually be organising such shindigs as Shambala Festival and Starry Skies but for 2020 they’ve clubbed together with various other suppliers who’ve had events cancelled to pull together a Covid-safe gathering covering all sorts of activities and services. What that means for guests is an on-site café, a bar in a vintage bus, wood-fired pizzas and cool drinks delivered to your tent, lawn games to borrow and a music programme with live acoustic sessions and music-themed yoga and dance sessions. On top of that little lot is a fab programme of socially distanced activities for grownups and kids alike, including Vinyasa yoga sessions, art and craft classes, human table football, quizzes, dance classes and a proper sports day (you know, sock wrestling, egg throwing, races and the like…)

Local attractions

You may not find much time to get out and about what with all the antics on site, but the folk here do have a few ideas up their sleeves if you fancy popping out for a bit. Closest is Kelmarsh Tunnels, a mile away – it’s part of the Brampton Way bike path, which runs along an old railway line and is a top spot for a cycle or stroll. Other locations for a walk nearby include the reservoirs at Welford, Thorpe Malsor and Sulby, or the historic Foxton Locks, which has Britain’s longest set of staircase locks and dates back over 200 years. All these are less than 15 minutes’ drive away. To take in a bit more of the area’s history, stop by at Naseby Battlefield (five minutes’ drive) or board a steam train for a ride on the Northampton & Lamport Railway (15 minutes). If you’d rather stick to the open-air pursuits, there’s golf five minutes away in Market Harborough and horse riding 15 minutes away in Church Brampton.
