General

  • Family-run site on a working farm in Northamptonshire
  • Castles, stately homes and woodland walks all within a 20-minute drive
  • Farm shop and café selling local produce; 10 minutes' walk from a pub

Find fab nosh and forest walks on this family-run working farm site in Northamptonshire: New Lodge Farm Caravan and Camping Site is a peaceful and spacious spot in the Rockingham Forest, a once-vast wooded area that was William the Conqueror’s favourite hunting ground. Whatever you’re chasing, the mix of medieval castles, market towns and ancient woodlands teeming with wildlife makes for rich pickings...

Surrounded by fields, with the skies visited by a large resident population of red kites, you’ll feel right out in nature here. Dogs are welcome as well, and there’s a two-acre walking area set aside, taking you and canine companions down to the duck ponds.

The farm shop and café are bursting with local produce to relish or to pack as picnics on your rambles round the area. Barbecues are allowed and there’s a mighty good selection of farm-fresh lamb, beef and pork for you to buy at the shop. For more supplies, it’s a 10-minute walk into Bulwick, where there’s a village store selling basics and a cracking good pub with hot food.

Preserving a strong sense of the past, the team at New Lodge Farm Caravan and Camping Site have converted the old Victorian milking parlour into a block containing bright and roomy washrooms with showers, a laundry and a washing-up area.

Lovely clean site with excellent service pitch and lovely views over farmland and animals. I did manage to snap a picture of the beautiful red kite through the caravan window! The showers were spotless, and although I can see the need for the use of concussive taps, personally I wished they were ordinary taps and didn't need to be pushed on every two mins! The farm shop sold lovely food and the burgers were especially yummy! It really was a tranquil site and easy to visit lots of places during the day including Rutland Water, Harringworth Viaduct, the local area including St Peters Church in Deene and Oundle Mill. A lovely team of staff and were happy to help, many thanks.

    Disliked:

The push on taps but loved the music in the shower block. There was free WiFi but only worked in the café area which wasn't open too often during our stay but really needed in our caravan as my mobile broke and could have used ipad if WiFi had been able to connect - so possibly if we had chosen a pitch near to the building would have picked it up but we were a good distance away.

Lovely site, friendly & helpful staff. Everywhere on site was very clean and tidy, relaxed atmosphere and freedom to choose your own pitch was great. Locality was central to a host of small, picturesque villages, with thatched cottages amidst lots of local stone houses.

    Disliked:

Constantly having to press for water in the shower, frustrating to say the least.
The facilities on site, shop, bistro etc. were only available a couple of hours a day, which was a shame, but understandable as it was family owned business with a small support staff. Wi-Fi not available campus wide.

Local attractions

One of England’s smaller counties, Northamptonshire packs a lot in to a small area, and it’s particularly well supplied with historic dwellings. The richly decorated but roofless Kirby Hall, the half-finished Elizabethan manor surrounded by wildflower meadows at Lyvden New Bield and the sturdy grandeur of 900-year-old Rockingham Castle can all be explored within a 20-minute drive.

If walks and wildlife are your thing, you’ll be similarly well sorted: make for Fermyn Wood Country Park (15 minutes) to see what the whole Rockingham Forest area must once have looked like, taking circular trails to spot badgers and fallow deer. A similar distance away, Bedford Purlieus National Nature Reserve buzzes with bird and insect life, among the remains of Roman and medieval quarries and smelting houses.

A 20-minute drive away, the nature reserve at Rutland Water is paired with a massive outdoor leisure area for swimming, walking, sailing, fishing and windsurfing. If you’re more into petrol power, it’s 15 minutes to Rockingham Speedway for regular race meets, track experiences and vintage rallies.

Heading further out (in every way), it's 50 minutes from the site to the National Space Centre in Leicester. While you're there, take in the King Richard III Visitor Centre and pay your respects to the last Plantagenet king, who now rests in the cathedral, and make time for a mooch round the 700-year-old market.

Must see

  • Rockingham Castle (6.1 miles)
  • Burghley House (8.8 miles)
  • Barnsdale Gardens (10.0 miles)

  • Lyveden New Bield (6.3 miles)
  • Woolsthorpe Manor (18.3 miles)
