Sheltered and secluded camping field

General

  • Small and friendly site 100 yards from the Severn
  • Close to a riverside 15th-century inn
  • A short walk from Tewkesbury

Take time out for a spot of fishing on the River Severn, followed by a drink in the 15th-century inn nearby, where the views are as tasty as the food and drink...

The Willows is a small, friendly site in spectacular and hugely handy location: despite being encircled by lush scenery with the river (and separately owned pub) a mere hundred yards away, it’s only a short walk into the lovely historic town of Tewkesbury.

You can pick up your freshwater fishing permit in the pub (as if you needed an excuse for a visit...).

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

AVoid like the plague Saturday nights if you want to get to sleep before 12-1 AM as the "Vikings" at the pub next door gather and have a very loud time of it. It does quite down after that so not all night.

Once pitched up and settled in we had a look around, the grounds are beautiful, it's only a small campsite, but it's perfect for a little escape.
Lots of wildlife, even visited in the night by a little hedgehog. Lots of walks nearby, to explore.
Facilities were clean and tidy, with nice hot shower.
All in we had a great stay and would recommend to anyone looking for a nice relaxed escape.

We have been coming to the Willows for three years now and come twice a year. The location is just lovely, at the back of the Lower Lode pub (a separate business to the campsite, excellent food, drinks and regular events and entertainment) and next to the river. It really is an excellent spot and you feel like you are away from the hustle and bustle of life. A short drive (or a ride across the ferry and a walk) into Tewkesbury for shopping, coffee shops, restaurant and places to look around.

The Willows site is rather simple in terms of facilities, but at the same time very adequate and comfortable. There seems to be a water tap for every caravan pitch and the pitches have a patch of hardstanding surrounded by grass. There's 22 caravan pitches and another field next door for tents. The toilet/shower block could do with a refurb but is warm and in the week we were there over bank holiday was always clean and stocked up. There's two outside sinks for washing up and the usual disposal point for Elsan and waste water.

The pub can be busy and they often do weddings at weekends but the music isn;t too loud and always goes off by midnight. We saw lots of lovely wildlife while we were there (hedgehogs wandering between the caravans every night!) and they allow campfires which is a majoy plus for us. We are already booked to go back.

Key code for toilets. With 2 teenage girls and wife all struggling to open door. I know it was necessary for a lock with all the campers using pub next door, but after entering code the ladies turned to the left to open, the mens you had to turn to the right which was not explained to us when checking in. The pub next door makes the campsite and the price paid was high for what you get. Although we couldn't complain about pitch, lots of space + water. Late night noisy adult party did keep us up though well past midnight on last night.

Local attractions

Slotted into a slender strip of land at the meeting point of the Severn and Avon rivers, Tewkesbury hasn’t changed much over the centuries: black and white Tudor buildings overhang the narrow streets, and the twelfth century abbey has the highest Norman tower in England. There are town and country museums to explore, historic buildings like the Old Baptist Chapel, plus shops and entertainment aplenty.

The local countryside and riverbanks are great for ramblers and guests will find boat and bike hire, windsurfing and golf courses nearby. Also on your doorstep are the golden villages and verdant hills of the Cotswolds and attractive provincial towns and cities such as Cheltenham and Gloucester.
