Aqueduct Marina Caravan Park: Picnic next to the pitch

General

  • Peaceful park in the centre of the Cheshire canal network
  • 100-acre site five miles from Nantwich with easy access from the M6
  • Heated amenities; barbecue and picnic areas; café with licensed bar

Given its name, you might reckon that this Cheshire site is right near some water. And you'd go to the top of the class, for Aqueduct Marina Caravan Park is on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, in the centre of the Cheshire canal network and surrounded by towpaths for waterside walks. Or might you just fancy sitting by the marina and watching the canal boats drift lazily by? (All the better to plot which type you're going to acquire when that lottery win is yours, all yours…)

Other lazy options at this peaceful park include the barbecue and picnic areas, or lounging around in the Galley café which has a licensed bar and monthly social events. The many shops, cafés and pubs of market town Nantwich are a five-mile drive away for lazy urban afternoons.

Aqueduct Marina is set on 100 acres of peaceful Cheshire farmland, with easy access to the M6 and off the B5074 in Church Minshull, near Chester and north Wales. Families, couples, small groups and dogs are all welcome.

As well as the barbecue and picnic areas, the park owners have also added a secure night-time barrier, CCTV, a DIY servicing bay and a recycling compound. A licensed bar is on site with monthly social events on the last weekend of the month.

Amenities are bang up to date on site too and include showers and toilets with underfloor heating and hairdryers, as well as a laundry room with washing machine, dryer and ironing table.

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 10 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Tents are not accepted at this park.

The café is open from 9.30am until 4pm Monday to Sunday.

Big pitch, nice location, cleanliness and warmth of shower/toilet block. Well lit but not too much to affect the night sky.
Walks in the area very good and local book t available to help choose.

    Disliked:

Cafe was closed and no local amenities, fortunately had seen this before we left so made sure we had everything we needed.
Shower/toilets are too far from the camp site. Fortunately it wasn’t wet whilst we were there as you would get soaked otherwise.
Despite the excellent walks, the downside is that you have to walk out on the road to access the canal walk. Maybe a pathway through the fieds with the sheep could be thought about?

The close proximity to marina, and lovely walks, nice coffee at Marina cafe.
Short (3mls?)drive/cycle ride into Nantwich which is pretty with plenty of independent shops and cafes.

    Disliked:

The caravan site is not as pretty as the marina, no tubs of flowers, grass could do with a mow.
No ‘full English breakfast at marina cafe’

Location, no local shop or pub nearby. Bit pricey especially as we had to pay for 4 small dogs that stayed in the motorhome unless on lead for a walk. So couldn't really understand what the 3xtra money is for.

Great pitches with electricity and water. Fantastic field for the dogs to have a good run off the lead. The site overlooks a marina, which we loved.
The showers and toilets were lovely and clean. Underfloor heating, nice and warm and never had to wait. They even provide body wash, shampoo and conditioner.
We had lunch in the cafe which was great.
Plenty of walks in the area.
    Nice and quiet site.

Very clean and tidy. Shower and toilet block immaculate. Hair dryer in shower block.
    Helpful staff.
Good email communication before arrival meant that despite us arriving after closing hours we had the gate pass number and our pitch number so it was not a problem.

    Disliked:

Because we arrived after closing time (due to traffic delays) we didn’t get the WiFi password until the following morning as it wasn’t included in the pre arrival email.
The grey water waste couldn’t be drained directly from the motorhome as the drain was not accessible from a drivable position.
The opening time of the reception was not clear for a bank holiday. It turned out it was Sunday hours.

Good location, competent friendly staff and interesting site being in a marina! Hard to form a proper opinion as our visit was in a quiet period very late in the year. Got the feeling though the place would be really buzzing during better weather? Certainly one of the rare places we would love to (and will) visit again .

Local attractions

Aqueduct Marina Caravan Park's Cheshire location and easy access from the M6 means it's in a most handy spot to get to heaps of tourist attractions around this part of the north west and Chester.

A popular option in the area is Oulton Park, the racing track in the little village of Budworth that bills itself as the most picturesque track in all the land, or you could hike around the wilds of nearby Delamere Forest, or stick to lazy days and potter around small Cheshire villages like Tattenhall and Tarporley.

Chester is also easily accessible from the caravan park and has heaps to see among its old streets and swish shops. Animal fans make their way to Chester Zoo on the outskirts of the city to see as many as possible of its 12,000+ animals and over 400 species; if nature is your animalish thing, also get along to the Blue Planet Aquarium and its 100 or so living displays including the biggest school of sharks in Europe.

Green fingered? Clear the car boot and drive over to Bridgemere, one of the biggest garden centres in the world and with all things gardenlike as well as toys and clothes in its mammoth shopping centre.
