Aqueduct Marina Caravan Park: Picnic next to the pitch

General

  • Peaceful park in the centre of the Cheshire canal network
  • 100-acre site five miles from Nantwich with easy access from the M6
  • Heated amenities; barbecue and picnic areas; café with licensed bar

Given its name, you might reckon that this Cheshire site is right near some water. And you'd go to the top of the class, for Aqueduct Marina Caravan Park is on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, in the centre of the Cheshire canal network and surrounded by towpaths for waterside walks. Or might you just fancy sitting by the marina and watching the canal boats drift lazily by? (All the better to plot which type you're going to acquire when that lottery win is yours, all yours…)

Other lazy options at this peaceful park include the barbecue and picnic areas, or lounging around in the Galley café which has a licensed bar and monthly social events. The many shops, cafés and pubs of market town Nantwich are a five-mile drive away for lazy urban afternoons.

Aqueduct Marina is set on 100 acres of peaceful Cheshire farmland, with easy access to the M6 and off the B5074 in Church Minshull, near Chester and north Wales. Families, couples, small groups and dogs are all welcome.

As well as the barbecue and picnic areas, the park owners have also added a secure night-time barrier, CCTV, a DIY servicing bay and a recycling compound. A licensed bar is on site with monthly social events on the last weekend of the month.

Amenities are bang up to date on site too and include showers and toilets with underfloor heating and hairdryers, as well as a laundry room with washing machine, dryer and ironing table.

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 10 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Tents are not accepted at this park.

The café is open from 9.30am until 4pm Monday to Sunday.

The canal boat marina was lovely, pity that the touring pitches did not overlook them as the boats are the only interesting things to see on this site. Location is good for travelling to nearby villages and the Cheshire countryside. Sorry, but for the reasons below, we would not recommend or visit this site again.

    Disliked:

Nearly everything! The touring pitches seem to have been an 'after-thought' when planning where to put them. They are tucked into a corner with no outlook, not even the surrounding area is nice to look at! Car parking areas and canal boat storage has taken pride of place around the marina, whatever for, it baffled us?? The onsite 'bistro' is overpriced and the food and cooking of it not good at all, plus it is opened only limited hours and never in the evening. We couldn't fathom where the boat owners in the marina would go if they wanted to eat out, because they obviously wouldn't be able to drive, having no car. so I think they are a little short-changed on this site as well! Showers and toilets, also not very clean, we would definitely not return to the site.

Local attractions

Aqueduct Marina Caravan Park's Cheshire location and easy access from the M6 means it's in a most handy spot to get to heaps of tourist attractions around this part of the north west and Chester.

A popular option in the area is Oulton Park, the racing track in the little village of Budworth that bills itself as the most picturesque track in all the land, or you could hike around the wilds of nearby Delamere Forest, or stick to lazy days and potter around small Cheshire villages like Tattenhall and Tarporley.

Chester is also easily accessible from the caravan park and has heaps to see among its old streets and swish shops. Animal fans make their way to Chester Zoo on the outskirts of the city to see as many as possible of its 12,000+ animals and over 400 species; if nature is your animalish thing, also get along to the Blue Planet Aquarium and its 100 or so living displays including the biggest school of sharks in Europe.

Green fingered? Clear the car boot and drive over to Bridgemere, one of the biggest garden centres in the world and with all things gardenlike as well as toys and clothes in its mammoth shopping centre.
