Kessingland Beach Holiday Park: A quiet corner

General

  • Seaside family park 15 minutes' drive from Lowestoft
  • Access to lots of sporting and watersports activities
  • Spa, sports bar, pools, adventure playground, bar and restaurant

Starland Krew and sandcastles for the munchkins, a spa bath, a sports bar, and fish and chip-fuelled smiles all round… guests can pick and mix from a vast menu of family activities at Kessingland Beach Holiday Park, on the gorgeous Suffolk coast, just north of the Benacre National Nature Reserve and 15 minutes' drive from Lowestoft.

Guests at this seaside site have access to great sports and watersports facilities, playing all sorts of games at the multisports court, shooting down the waterslide into the indoor pool, splashing about in the open-air pool or wallowing contentedly in the adjacent hot tub.

For the under-11s, the kids' clubs have activities to please sporty, arty and smarty pants alike and there’s an undercover play area and an outdoor adventure playground too, with a zipwire for the intrepid and swings and slides for those who prefer more placid playtime. Whatever activity you select can be followed up by gathering all ages for something from the frisky programme of family entertainment for the evenings.

Aside from the chippy and other takeaway food, the on-site Boathouse bar and restaurant serves up a good range of grub. Go on, have that pudding – there’s a lovely beach right outside where you can stroll it all off.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Single-sex parties of three or more people under 25 are not permitted on site.

Children's entertainment, our little ones were in their element. Fish and chip shop on site was good value. Location near the beach was great.

    Disliked:

Arriving! Our caravan didn't fit on the allocated pitch even though we provided measurements when we booked, had to wait around for them to try and fit us elsewhere (our caravan isn't exactly big either). Just about got on another skinny pitch. Really cramped in on the touring site, if your used to "non commercial" campsites this place is not for you. Decided to eat in the restaurant first night and waited over an hr for food to arrive. The elsan point (caravan toilet emptying) had no soap.. not even a working soap holder or hand sanitiser which is so unhygienic! Toilet block was flooded from the showers every time I went in. Few of the toilets didn't work or were constantly blocked. The club house toilets were horrendous, so so cold, the taps were covered in limescale which shouldn't be there with regular cleaning, if the toilets were not blocked they had no loo roll and they were just generally dated. Staff didn't communicate, swimming pool lady said we can book a slot online (couldnt find where) or in reception, went to reception and they said they cant do it go to the swimming pool. And the SPEED people were driving around the site! For a family orientated campsite the speed of fellow drivers was disgusting!

Pleasant greeting (once asked at reception where to go) by the tent touring guide.
Lovely staff in the boathouse restaurant. Especially Madison.
Security were quick to help when called- very prompt indeed.
Near by beach behind the resort was perfect and quiet and the site was local to another beach, south beach 20mins away

    Disliked:

Swimming facilities were lacking, especially changing rooms- felt tiny and difficult to manoeuvre.
No welcome until I asked where to go at reception- I know there was a welcome pack but I felt a little lost / was a free for all.
Wifi signal was weak, especially in the tent touring area but not essential

The amount of activities offered for the children in the day, this definitely helped us as the weather wasn’t the best while we were there.
We got given a pitch that was not right for a motor home, there was a foot difference from end to end, we asked to be moved and luckily there was 3 pitches that were available, so we got moved to a flatter pitch. Had there not been any available we would have had to abort our holiday.

    Disliked:

We didn’t get any information in our pack regarding entertainment programme. We didn’t know what was on at what time and we had to keep asking.

Local attractions

The nearby seaside towns of Lowestoft (15 minutes' drive) and Southwold (20 minutes) are among the most charming in the country: think fab family beaches, candy-coloured beach huts, piers and proms, plus buckets and spades of old-school charm. Aim for the former if you're after a bit of watersports action, or pick the latter for chi-chi shops, a zany pier attraction and seafront walks to Walberswick.

Swap beaches for beasties with family outings to see the exotic beasts roaming the plains of Suffolk at Africa Alive! (five minutes), or seek out seahorses, sharks and penguins at Sea Life Great Yarmouth (35 minutes). For wildlife of a more local variety, nip up to the waterways of the Norfolk Broads (half an hour) where you can become captain of your own boat for the day (or take a tour if you're unsure of your navigational expertise…)

For family fun on a grand scale, head to Pleasurewood Family Theme Park (25 minutes); at the opposite end of the spectrum is the tiny townscape at Merrivale Model Village (35 minutes). And somewhere in the middle is the swish Victorian pad at Somerleyton Hall (half an hour), where both mansion and gardens are worth a stroll.

Must see

  • Somerleyton Hall and Gardens (13.1 kilometers)
  • Fritton Lake Country World (15.9 kilometers)
  • Pleasure Beach (20.8 kilometers)
