  • Woodland site on the outskirts of the Peak District National Park
  • Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers theme parks within an hour
  • Equestrian centre on site; guests are welcome to bring their horses
If you’re looking for a place in Derbyshire where the whole gang is welcome – as in adults, children, dogs and… horses (yes, really) – Wardlow Wells Farm could be the one for you. This family-run woodland site is also home to an equestrian centre, so you can treat your equine pal to a getaway. Stabling, bedding and feed is all available, as well as access to grass paddocks and a floodlit indoor sand school. Sound good but worried about how you’ll transport your horse? Don’t be – the owners have got that covered, too, with a haulage service. Once you’ve settled in, it’s time to saddle up and explore your surrounds (horses aren’t obligatory, it’s just as nice to go by foot or bike). The site is on the outskirts of the Peak District National Park, so that’s the obvious choice for adventures, with plenty of bridleways, walking trails and off-road cycling routes to cover. Be on the lookout for wildlife spots while you roam, too. Or, stay closer to base and brush up on your horse training technique instead, with a lesson in natural horsemanship at the equestrian centre. Whatever you choose, you’re in for good views here. The site sits 1,150 feet above sea level and, on a clear day, sunrises will light up Lincoln Cathedral. Sunsets are just as scenic (especially when admired from around a campfire), with the sun setting deep into the Peak District’s hills. Just so you know, there are no toilet or shower facilities and no waste disposal or bins on site, although there is a fresh water supply.

Route directions

The site is accessed via Loadshead Lane. If you are travelling by bus, there are bus routes at the bottom of Rodknoll Lane on the A619. The public bridleway is not very well maintained and there are potholes and ruts in places, so please take care when driving along it. The site does not take any responsibility for any vehicle damage, so please ensure that you 'straddle' any ruts in order to protect the underneath of your vehicle.

Local attractions

Get to grips with stately manor life at the Chatsworth Estate (20-minute drive), where you can wander through the house and pretty gardens, home to fountains, sculptures and a rock garden. There’s also a farmyard and playground here, as well as a couple of eateries to keep your energy up. Not content with just one? Make it a trio of stately home visits with trips to Haddon Hall (half an hour), with its grand Tudor hall and Elizabethan gardens, and Hardwick Hall (35 minutes), where there’s an Elizabethan hall, gorgeous gardens and countryside to navigate. Bolsover Castle (half an hour) is worth a look, too – the views over Derbyshire from here are smashing. Family days out nearby include Gulliver's Kingdom theme park (25 minutes) and Heights of Abraham (25 minutes), a hilltop park with underground caverns and play areas, which is reached by cable car. If you’re in search of more adrenaline hits, a visit to Alton Towers theme park (an hour) should take care of your needs.
