Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals. These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence. Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away. If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast. Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Nestled in lovely woods by a lake, this park gets props for its calm vibe & easy access to California Country Park's cafe/playground. Pitches are usually roomy & level. Staff are often called friendly. Showers are clean & warm, though a bit dated for some. A few Wi-Fi & minor maintenance snags.

Liked The site was very clean and relaxed. Staff were friendly and it was brilliant being able to short walk into the country park. Showers were hot (sometime a little too hot!)

Disliked - Onsite Shop was very limited /small but there is supermarkets about a 10mins drive away.
- No ‘on-site’ activities for the kids to do (but about a minute walk around the lake to the country park play park)
- no WiFi and poor phone/internet signal onsite

Liked Clean toilets and showers.

Disliked Cramped tent spaces. Never seen so cramped anywhere else in 20 years of camping. Just don't book.
Though this is on lake, the lake view is restricted to cabins on the lake hence it being on lake ( pond ratger) has no advantage whatsoever.

Liked Grounds really well maintained. Friendly staff. Very quiet. Great setting in the trees, near the lake and a short walk to California Country Park playground.

Disliked The cost was £52 per night, which is the most I'm likely to pay all year, by far.

No WiFi.

The chemical toilet has a permanent mesh over it, which means that all the contents of your toilet get caught and have to be manually sprayed to release - not at all pleasant and the spray-off even more so!

Liked The location of the park was wonderful set in a great country park with good walks for dogs straight from the door.

Disliked The pitch size was quite small for a pitch with an awning. Having the awning meant you had to park the car in a tight spot at the front of the caravan.
The male toilet block was very dirty. I be fair it had one of those floors that looked dirty even when cleaned. But it was dirty. Another comment someone said possibly not cleaned all weekend and I echo this comment as witnessed cleaning once in four days here. The shower cubicle block, all the water runs down into one cubicle into a puddle - disgusting. I used first day only and then not again

Disliked No facilities and no local shops. Paid for a fully serviced pitch which was too small to pitch my awning. Advertised internet but there is none. Waste facilities and toilets could do with updating

There’s plenty of scope for fresh air in California Country Park (right next to the site), but if you fancy stretching your legs a little more, you’ve got plenty of choice: the South Downs National Park, New Forest and the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within an hour’s drive for scenic walks and bike rides. Golfers can pick from three courses within a 15-minute drive. On fine days, take the kids to meet the friendly animals at Lockey Farm, 10 minutes away. For less clement days, the Museum of Berkshire Aviation, Skiplex Indoor Ski Slopes, Coral Reef waterpark and Gravity Force trampoline park are all about a 20-minute drive away. For a bit of culture and history, it will take half an hour or so to drive to Windsor Castle, or around an hour to Oxford for wanders around the university’s colleges and punting along the river.
