  • Berwickshire holiday park on the River Tweed's banks near Coldstream
  • Five minutes’ drive to the Hirsel Estate and 40 minutes to Holy Island
  • Dog-friendly site; pubs five minutes’ drive
Can’t decide whether to holiday in Scotland or England? Coldstream Holiday Park is situated just above the banks of the River Tweed, which forms a natural boundary between the two countries. No need to make a decision, then, as you can visit both countries in one day. Near the historic town of Coldstream, the site has views all the way to the Cheviot Hills and you can see the Eildon Hills on clear days. It is a handy, dog-centric base for walking and cycling in Berwickshire countryside, with a golf course within five minutes’ drive, and fishing (in season) on the Tweed. Whether you’re heading further north into the Scottish Highlands, or using the holiday park as your main base, this well-equipped and family-friendly site offers facilities including an architect-designed heated amenities block with toilets and showers. There’s a launderette and washing-up area too so you can keep everybody and everything clean and shiny. Source bits and bobs for meals and barbecues in Coldstream convenience stores, or visit the town’s pubs, restaurants and takeaways if your idea of being on holiday does not involve any cooking at all.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Good size tent pitches, friendly staff and a very well maintained amenity block with hot showers and toilets that are cleaned twice a day. The potwash area has three sinks, two microwave ovens and two small fridges freezers also very clean. There are also two washing machines in the building (I expect that room was also very good but I didn't go in there). The campsite was very quiet with a couple of pubs nearby local parks and walks and the ice cream popped in a couple of times as well 😃

Disliked Nowhere on site to buy any essentials (bread /milk /cereal) in the morning.
Shower timer could be a bit longer and the shower curtain in the ladies was too short water not contained in shower tray leaving nowhere to stand while getting dried

Spacious pitch, clean facilities, easy access…

Local attractions

Coldstream (five minutes’ drive) has much to offer in the way of history. This border town changed hands between the English and Scots many times over the centuries and is now home to informative military history displays in Coldstream Museum. It’s also home to the Hirsel Estate, with lakeside dog walks, lovely gardens to wander around, and craft shops where you can pick up some souvenir tartan. A little further afield you’ll come across a series of austere ruined castles, including Twizel (10 minutes), Norham and Etal (both 20 minutes), all once responsible for keeping English bandits out of Scotland. The romantic and remote remains of Dryburgh Abbey (half an hour) are also worth a visit – especially at dusk when they have a haunting beauty. On the English side of the border, drive across the causeway to Holy Island (40 minutes, check tide times) to see art deco Lindisfarne Castle (45 minutes), or head to Bamburgh (40 minutes) to spend the day on its extensive sandy beach. At Alnwick Castle (50 minutes), kids can explore the poison gardens, spot Harry Potter film locations and take broomstick-riding lessons.
