  • Peaceful site on a 60-acre farm on the banks of the River Ouse
  • A 20-minute drive or 40-minute quiet bike ride from York
  • Three great village pubs within a 10-minute drive
A rural riverside stay on the banks of the Ouse – ooh, yes please… North Yorkshire site Hales Hill Park has a splendid 650 metres of river frontage as part of its 60-acre farm seven miles from York. With that waterside setting comes a fine spot in which to settle for a bit of birdwatching or coarse fishing (seek permission from the owners before getting your kit in place), or just to set up a deckchair, pour a drink and admire some classic country views. There’s easy access to public footpaths and bike trails too if you’d like to get out and survey your surrounds – stick to the rural lanes or pedal over to the National Cycle Network Route 65 to get up to York in 40 minutes or so (or drive it in 20 minutes if you’re a tad wobbly on two wheels). Sixty acres gives the owners plenty of space to play with, so they’ve kindly allocated a decent chunk of it to their guests – which means scope for kids to play games, for dogs to bound around and for folk to safely set up barbecues or campfires for alfresco evenings. Rather than encroach on the peaceful space, the team here have kept facilities simple, just installing showers, toilets and an area for dealing with rubbish and waste disposal. North Yorkshire not treating you to alfresco eating weather? Take your pick from any of the three country pubs within a 10-minute drive – the folk here give thumbs up to each and every one of them.

What customers say

Spacious, peaceful sites with a friendly vibe & decent pub. Clean facilities, pick your own spot & great for exploring York. Some found loos/showers a bit stretched when busy, but most loved it & want to go back. River access is private.

Liked Lovely site, clean and tidy, loved the self check in so you can choose your own pitch. The last couple of days we were the only ones there, liked how the warden came to check on us to make sure we were ok. Will definitely be booking again.

Disliked The rain!! But this is nothing the site can control!

Disliked Wasps everywhere! Think we pitched on a wasps nest
Toilets/showers were not kept clean, only 1 sink so you couldn't wash your hands whilst people were brushing their teeth in a morning.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, we have 2 toilet blocks... 2 sinks in each block and a further 3 communal sinks.
Thank you for letting me know about the nests I will let the pest controller know there is a nest in the area.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Lots of space, so don't feel crowded in. Flat ground to pitch tent that actually let pegs be driven in was a great change!
Site is rural but close enough for a short drive to a supermarket.

Disliked Nothing to say here

Liked Spacious site, very peaceful. We were on Charlie's field and it was nice and quiet there. Nice to be able to choose your own pitch. Thank you to the lady who runs the bar who gave us info on where to pitch up

Disliked When we arrived it was a little confusing to know where to pitch as we arrived late ish in the evening and there was no info on where to go. Maybe a board with some info could be helpful

Liked It's a nice place, but there's no access to the water; only a private club has access. There's no fishing spot, as the description suggests. The river side in the photos is private, and people staying at the field aren't allowed on it. There's a nice bar, very reasonable prices, and friendly service. We were alone on the field on Sunday afternoon, which was a lovely time watching sunset.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, you can join the public club for £125 a year. due to H&S/insurance we cannot allow access to the river unless you join the club. The river is tidal with strong undercurrents. the public slipway is a five minute drive away in Acaster Malbis, this is above the lock and much safer. You are allowed to camp next to the river, it is only the river slipway and pontoon your can not go on, you can fish from the river bank.

Disliked Dislike toilets and showers. We had a lovely weekend here but unfortunately the dirty toilets and unclean showers really did let it down

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, really sorry to hear you found the facilities dirty, they are cleaned twice a day and it is unusual for us to have bad feedback about them.

Liked Tent field was nicely cut and we had it to ourselves one night. Nice views.

Disliked Filthy dirty washing up area, covered in what looks like finely ground up dirt all over the sink and draining board.Looks like Someone washed their dog in it. Disgusting. Camp infested with wasps ( yes, we tried leaving them alone and disposing of any food waste immediately ). They didn't leave us alone. No fronts on soap dispensers. Soap ran out not replaced that day or next( why isn't cleaner checking this? ) some sort of brown liquid on floor in toilet. Was still there 5 hours later not cleaned up.Bins were full up and adding to wasp problem. Ive stayed on immaculate sites charging same or less without any of these problems.

Liked Very quiet and spacious. Perfect for children. The touring toilet block was really clean

Disliked The site wasn't for us. It did look runned down compared to the pictures on the website. If we were with children it would have made a difference

Local attractions

You’ll be wanting a trip to York, yes? Or perhaps several, given how much there is to see and do around the place, and the fact that it’s only a 20-minute drive away. Start by getting to grips with the area’s history by taking a walk around the old city walls, visiting the castle and minster and checking out the exhibits at the Jorvik Viking Centre and Yorkshire Museum. Those fascinated by things that move will certainly want to make a stop at the city’s excellent National Railway Museum; sweet-toothed types will no doubt find themselves drawn more to the tempting aromas that waft out of York’s Chocolate Story. And when it's time for a pint? It’s said there are 365 pubs within the city walls… Take a break from city wandering with a day out cheering on the gee-gees at York Racecourse (15 minutes’ drive), admiring the landscaping at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (25 minutes) or meeting the menagerie at Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park (15 minutes).
