If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Great spot, easy access to the Tissington Trail, and friendly staff get a big tick. Toilets and showers usually clean, though can get busy. Awesome heated pool and playground. Pods and bell tents are a winner. Some found pitches a bit rough or muddy, and Wi-Fi's spotty. Still a top base for the Peak District, most would come back.

Liked Excellent en-suite pod- really clean, beds all made up on arrival. Powerful shower and quiet campsite with great access to the Tissington Trail and Dovedale stepping stones. The Old Dog does great food!

Liked Excellent. Forgot our towels and they were immediately provided without issue. My daughter also forgot to pack her toothbrush and toothpaste. The shop had shut and till closed for the day but was directed to help myself of the shelves. Paid for the items the following day. Site was spotless and the toilet and shower blocks very well kept. Ideal location to get onto the Tissington Trail with the dog. Fantastic stay, highly recommended.

Liked The location for easy access to Matlock, Buxton, and Bakewell. Very quite during weekdays , however very busy from Fiday evening. Small Indoor heated swimming pool, toilets and showers very clean on Weekdays

Disliked Toilets and showers required more visits for replacement of loo rolls and cleans at Weekends
