  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Powered grass caravan site

Liked: We had two touring caravans in our group and as requested the site placed us on adjacent pitches. There is a lovely playground for children with the grass pitches looking on to it. The toilet block (with showers) was kept very clean. (NB there weren’t any private washing cubicles - just the showers). Reception staff were very helpful and pleasant and the shop was pretty well stocked (no OS maps though!). Very easy access to the Tissington Trail. We used the swimming pool (delighted to find it was free!) which was very busy on a damp Saturday morning, but appreciated.

Disliked: The grass pitches for tents and tourers by the playground were spacious but seemed to be on the remnants of a medieval ‘ridge and furrow’ farming system! If one obeyed instructions and placed the caravan over the pitch marker the van was on quite a side to side incline which was hard to rectify without blocks. Some pitches were better than others in this respect…

Camping pod

Liked: Fabulous well kept site, staff are lovely and helpful. The pod was great, had our own toilet and shower room behind the pod which also included an undercover wash up area. Great base for getting around we abandoned the car and walked to Ashbourne and Dovedale both well worth a visit. There is a pub 20 mins down the trail, think it was called The Old Dog, made to feel very welcome, dogs allowed inside. Looking to go back next year as still loads to explore.

Disliked: Nothing

Camping pod

Liked: We stayed in a pod for 3 nights. The pods were good, decent beds and a good size, site was clean and well maintained. Having your own en-suite is a proper bonus. Access to walks and especially the Tissington Trail was excellent and The Old Dog pub in Thorpe, which is easily walkable from the site is highly recommended. Approx and hour walk into Ashbourne and other villages are not far away on the trail. Small shop on site is pricey as you'd expect but had everything we needed

Disliked: The pitches are close together, ours was overlooked but not the end of the world. Our biggest disappointment with the site was not being able to use the pool. Despite trying to book ahead it was fully booked up for the whole time we were there which was annoying as we'd picked the site specifically as it had a pool. I recommend you try and book it the minute you arrive if you're thinking of going.

Liked: This is a lovely site in a fantastic location with access right onto the Tissinngton Trail. Staff very helpful and friendly. Excellent park for the kids.

Disliked: The toilets, while nice, could have been checked and cleaned a little more often.

Camping pod

Liked: Excellent site. Very clean and lovely park facility , shop and pool . Owners were particularly helpful and nothing was too much for them. They even gave us a kettle to use. Pod was clean and bathroom too. Shower had plenty of hot water. We had a lovely stay.

Disliked: First time staying in a pod. We didn’t realise that there was no kettle etc in the pod but this was not a fault of the site. Maybe it should state that there’s no cooking/water boiling facilities and that you need to bring all you would for camping.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
