Plenty of space

General

  • Peaceful woodland park 10 minutes' drive from Wokingham centre
  • An hour's drive from Oxford, the New Forest and the south coast
  • Next door to a lake and country park for fishing and walks

Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals.

These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence.

Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away.

If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast.

Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Girls showers not hot, cold one night. Men's showers under maintenance whole week so only single shower available to men.

From the manager...

Good Afternoon

Thank you for your review

I am sorry that you felt the showers not that hot , I will get maintenance to review the temperature. We do try during the winter months to refurbish certain areas of the park and the men's showers we felt was one of the areas that needed updating. The family room shower was however open for the gents . I do hope that this did not cause too much inconvenience

Have a great Christmas and hopefully see you in 2021

Bit of a tight entrance over a little bridge. Wasn’t too impressed with the neighbours who was staying in the chalets who was road workers from Ireland, slamming and repeatedly shutting the doors at 645am on a Sunday morning.

Pleasing environment, attractively landscaped, on the edge of a lake and adjacent to woodland walks. Ease of access (M3 and M4). All facilities available on the pitch or close by; a good cafe in the park; shops just a short drive. Some excellent pubs - one in walking distance (The Queen’s Oak) and highly recommended for Sunday roast. The site appeared to take seriously its responsibility for Covid safety. Staff welcoming and helpful. Security seemed effective.

    Disliked:

    Nothing significant. Small points:
    1. pitch numbering is obscure (we and others drove past and had to u-turn our rigs).
    2. A few lamps not serviceable, including one over the door to the male lavatories and showers. 3. Chemical lavatory disposal point was dingy and seemed ill-maintained.

Nice campsite/location. Shame about the bins and dog fouling.02/11/2020

Nice sized campsite with large fully-serviced pitches. Good location for nice walks and bike rides.

    Disliked:

Bins were always overflowing and the site wasn't even full. They needed emptying more often. Also couldn't recycle cardboard/paper, only glass. The other big problem was I had to clean dog poo of my kids' shoes four times in one weekend! Why weren't campers with dogs clearing up after themselves? This just gives all dog owners a bad name. There were also dogs off leads, which shouldn't be the case on a campsite and probably caused the fouling issues as the owners weren't aware of where they were "going". I should add that I'm a dog lover but this behaviour by owners isn't acceptable on a campsite where small kids are running around.

Following your comments we have spoken with the team and i must say we where all very shocked and disappointed as we do have our bins emptied very regular, whilst this is in no way an excuse we do have some guests that feel that leaving there bags next to the bin is easier than walking to the other bins or even opening the bins to throw rubbish in.

I totally agree with you in relation to the dogs owners not being responsible we do try and ensure that guests are aware to pick up there dog faeces with signage.

I do hope that this hasn't deterred you from visiting us again soon
