  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

What customers say

A ripper spot in the Peaks! Families love the massive kids' play area and sparkling pool. Staff are legends. Great Tissington Trail access. A few reckon the loos are a bit of a trek and past their prime, but overall, a top Aussie holiday.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Loved the quiet nature of the place. Lots of space for kids to run about
The pool is a great extra- it did seem to be very strong in chlorine though.
Nice grass pitches

Disliked Shower block near where we camped could be improved.

Camping pod

Liked The location was nice

Disliked Our pod was very very basic. It was right next to the road too our dogs weren’t ever allowed to be without a lead. There was nothing to do on the site and the pool was closed. A kettle in the pod would have been nice for a morning cuppa

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Everything was nice about the camp site and the facilities.

Disliked Only a small issue, but it was hard to get a time slot to use the swimming pool and if it could be open until 5 instead of 4 then would perhaps give more possibility of having a swim.
The price was a bit steep for myself and my son for a non-electric pitch. The pitch could have up to 6 people, but I felt there should be a discount if less people or smaller tent.

Recommend to friends Visit again

Good campsite with lots of facilities. Electric pitches seem better.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Good facilities; fantastic playground, swimming pool (need to book), decent shop, washing up area, modern toilets, and lots of camping types. Roads were very well maintained and was a safe place to bring children.

Non electric pitch was quiet and large.

Disliked Non electric field was very sloped and very busy when we arrived. Field was quite far from facilities; sort of feels like non electric is a bit forgotten about with no facilities nearby. Electric pitches either had good views, or were near the playground and were flat.

The toilets and showers, although modern and clean when we arrived were pretty disgusting by the end of it, and seemed like they were maybe cleaned once in the four days we were there based upon what I saw.

Given it was the most expensive non electric we saw in the area it probably didn't justify the price point.

Camping pod

Liked The views were stunning, the campsite wasn’t too loud. Despite being told bedding wasn’t provided, it was. The pods were quite roomy

Disliked It wasn’t glamping, it was more like being on a school trip in a shed. Every other glamping pod I’ve stayed at has had a glamorous aspect, tea, coffee, a kettle, sometimes even a small fridge and a way to cook. Empty pods had their outside lights left on all night by the cleaning crew. Our shower was used by someone else, we only left it unlocked so that we could all shower one after another without having to lock and unlock each time. As far as glamping goes we will not be returning. There was nothing to make this a better experience than camping other than there being proper beds. These should not be advertised as glamping pods, just enclosed pods or sheds with beds. Nothing glamorous to report at all. Check in was far too late considering check out time. You don’t get to spend your first day doing anything other than unpack and figure out a way to cook without a cooker, microwave and a no bbq rule.

Liked The kids park and the pool is decent.

Disliked 0 (zero) facilities at the non electric pitch. Locker room for the pool is like a scene from a Hackney Wick half way house. Also got told off for having a bbq on at night….

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked The safe were all so nice and friendly across site. Especially in the shop, where they made our children feel happy. The site is absolutely immaculate. The park is great too. Swimming pool well controlled and not crowded.

Disliked The only slight problem is the toilets for the bottom camping field is a good walk. Not so ideal on the evenings.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
