Villa Bio

Cyclists should find plenty to keep them happy around Villa Bio. Combine heritage and exercise with jaunts to the Talaiots de Son Fornés (55 minutes by bike) to see the sturdy stone remains of an ancient village. Alternatively, head for the private estate at Finca Son Real (an hour and a half) to follow trails among almond and fig orchards to a prehistoric necropolis with views over the Bay of Alcúdia. Hikers can wander up the slopes of Puig de Bonany (an hour and a half’s walk), keeping a camera at the ready to capture spectacular views over Manacor and Alcúdia to Palma airport. Once at the summit, you can also explore the ornate 16th-century sanctuary of Ermita de Bonany, the church where Franciscan missionary Junípero Serra delivered his last sermon before leaving the island. After that, head to the traditional Mallorcan village of Petra (15 minutes’ drive) to find out more about his life at the bijou Casa Museu de Fra Juníper Serra. And be sure to take a look inside the ornate Esglèsia de Sant Pere, where he was baptised in 1713; the church has a soaring Gothic-style nave, ornate altarpieces and a landmark bell tower.
