The gorgeous and laidback Île de Ré is always a great destination for a holiday – especially if you book a stay at Camping Les Peupliers, a family-run site on the edge of La Flotte.
That edge-of-town location is a nifty one, as it means you’ll have plenty of space to chill out but you’ll also be just a short walk from the restaurants, shops, cafés and markets of the town centre. Crucially, you’ll also be only about 800 metres from the beach – and you’ll have easy access to the island’s network of cycle paths, taking you through the salt marshes and pine forests to reach the towns, harbours and beaches all along the coast. Bikes can be hired on site if you're not able to bring your own.
Accommodation here is in comfortable mobile homes, each of which has its own kitchen and bathroom, along with a TV, dining table and both air conditioning and heating to keep the temperature just right at all times. There’s also a table and chairs out on your deck for easy outdoor meals and drinks.
Around the site are a good collection of leisure facilities including a lovely outdoor pool area (with paddling pool and waterslides as well as the main pool), a play area, a multisports court, a beach volleyball area, a gym and a pétanque court. In summer guests can also join in with various activities (games, tournaments and social evenings) and there are crafts and games laid on for the kids as well.
If all that makes you too busy to cook or head out to eat, don’t worry – there’s a snack bar on site, along with a bar, a grocery shop and a bread delivery service.

Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Nähe
There’s a lot of fun to be had just pedalling your bike along the island’s safe, flat and accessible cycle paths – along the way you’ll go through some gorgeous landscapes and may well be able to stop to refuel with some local delicacies (oysters, Île de Ré potatoes and salted butter caramels are some of the top choices).
You might also like to plan stops at historic sights like Abbaye des Châteliers (five minutes by bike) and Saint-Martin-de-Ré’s Citadelle Vauban (15 minutes) or check out the harbours in La Couarde-sur-Mer (half an hour) and Ars-en-Ré (an hour). Up at the top of the island you can climb the steps at Phare des Baleines (an hour and a quarter).
The Île de Ré beaches pack in plenty of variety, with family-friendly sandy stretches, quiet coves and watersports hubs. And for a change of scenery, you can head over to the mainland and a day in La Rochelle (half an hour’s drive).
