If you do decide to leave your peaceful bolthole then there’s plenty to see and do nearby in Pouillon and Dax or you could nip over the border into Spain for tapas and homemade local cider. Pouillon is home to an outdoor heated pool, an animal/pony farm, a Friday night market stuffed with local produce where you can sample food from the stalls, and fishing and pedalo hire at the Lac de Luc as well as tennis and miniature golf around its waters. Dax a 15-minute drive away is renowned for its thermal spas and its hot water spring fountain in the town centre. It's also a busy market town with a daily indoor market which flows out into the streets on a Saturday and plenty of stalls with a wide range of fresh regional produce. The Brocante antique and flea market is held on the first Thursday of every month. Vineyard tours, tastings, archery, golf and horse riding are all nearby Maison Bidas, along with a Wednesday market at Peyrehorade. Within an hour's drive you can get to the surfing, stunning golf courses and fab beaches of Capbreton, Hossegor and Biarritz, or to the vast range of the Pyrenees mountains, for rambling or hiking in the summer months or skiing during the winter: several ski stations are within easy reach of Maison Bidas Head to Spain within an hour and a half to visit San Sebastián, renowned for its tapas, local cider and shopping, or Pamplona, home of the famed running of the bulls and tomato festivals.
