Allgemein

We do like to be beside the seaside…especially when it’s one like this on the doorstep of the peaceful Caernarfon Bay Caravan Park at Dinas Dinlle in north Wales.

Snuggled sandily just 50 yards from the park, the award-winning and immaculate beach at this stretch of Caernarfon is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with knockout views towards the Llŷn Peninsula and Anglesey’s Ynys Llanddwyn, and said to be one of the best bass fishing beaches in Britain. It’s a surfing and watersports mecca too, or you could just take a constitutional around the coast to rubberneck at the local wildlife or take in the spectacular countryside views from the foothills of Snowdonia National Park – coast and countryside scenery are both easily at hand…

The park itself is a quiet retreat and is family-friendly (for dogs too); the classy and immaculate two and three-bedroom caravans at Caernarfon Bay include electricity and gas in the rental charge, with bed linen also provided. There’s an on-site shop selling local produce as well as last-minute essentials, and for ready-made nosh there are fish and chip shops within a couple of minutes’ walk.

Wegbeschreibung

To find us, from Caernarfon take the A499 Pwllheli Road. Stay on this road for about six miles until you come to a large walled estate on your left, called Glynllifon. Just past the entrance to the estate there is a clear sign for Dinas Dinlle and Caernarfon Airport. Turn right here and follow this road until you come onto the seafront, take the first right turn between the shop and the cafe. Then sharp right again into Caernarfon Bay Caravan Park.

Örtliche Sehenswürdigkeiten

There’s even more to the beach at Caernarfon than bagging bass and plain sailing: crane your neck cliffwards to Boncan Dinas to see the remains of the Iron Age hill fort Dinas Dinlle for starters, then take a pleasure flight at nearby Caernarfon Aiport to soar over the sights. Flying lessons are also available (Biggins goggles optional) and there’s an aviation museum too.

The seaside village Dinas Dinlle is seven miles away from Caernarfon Bay and can be used a gateway to many of Gwynedd’s goodies: landscape landmarks like Newborough Warren and Foryd Bay, and historical highlights including several castles and museums; Caernarfon Castle, the Welsh Slate Museum and the Segontium Roman Museum are all within ten miles.

Greenwood Forest Park in Snowdonia is a must to zip along on the world’s only people-powered rollercoaster, feed the inhabitants at Rabbit Village or go Ray Mears-y by learning to build a shelter in the woods; the conservation centre Anglesey Sea Zoo is also within reach to see seahorses and sharks.

You can firmly declare you’re not a number but a free (wo)man at Portmerion, famously used as the setting for ‘The Village’ in cult TV series The Prisoner; there’s a shop with series goodies in the Grade II listed Round House, No 6’s home in the series, and several woodland walks from the village such as from Triumphal Arch into Salutation Wood.

Or you could get splashy and energetic at Snowdonia National Park with whitewater rafting, windsurfing and sailing; there’s also hiking and mountain biking for landlubbers, and miles of bridleways to canter along for equine enthusiasts. Snowdonia, the highest mountain in England and Wales, is there to clamber up – there’s a café and narrow gauge railway station to puff at once you reach the top, and on a clear day you can see as far as Ireland. Too much to contemplate? Take the Snowdon Mountain Railway to the summit from Llanberis. (If you’re a trainspotter, you’re spoilt for choice with heritage railways all over north Wales; try the 25-mile route of the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Porthmadog for some stunning scenery.)

Finally, for teeing off, ironclad types will find six golf clubs in Snowdonia, including the 2010 Welsh Club of the Year Royal St Davids in Harlech.
