Whether you’re after a romantic getaway, a family break or exploring the Wiltshire countryside with your four-legged buddy, Shepherd Stays is an excellent proposition. At this luxury site, everybody should be able to wind down as they cosy up in smartly decorated shepherds’ huts with views of fields – and of the alpacas next door.
Cosying up is made easier by the presence of a woodburner and underfloor heating, and if you need to cradle a hot drink in your hands to feel like you’re truly relaxing, the kitchen area has a kettle and a coffee-making machine, plus plenty of tea, coffee, milk and sugar. Then there’s the luxury bed linen, and the fluffy towels in the shower room…
Ahead of your visit, you can arrange for a number of extras – from a breakfast box (which includes free-range eggs, sourdough bread and locally produced ham) to a massage with a visiting therapist. In short, everything is geared towards your relaxation, and since the huts are solar-powered and built from sustainable materials, your stay here is also low-impact.
If you decide to source your own breakfast, there’s a farm shop about a mile away (five minutes’ drive) and a convenience store in the village of Whitley (also five minutes). With dog-friendly walks nearby, several golf courses within a 20-minute drive, and the city of Bath 35 minutes’ drive away, there ought to be plenty to keep you busy here. And that’s without mentioning the selection of board games and the spectacular stargazing to be done from your hut’s decked area.

Castle Combe (20 minutes’ drive) is said to be among the most typical villages in the Cotswolds, with centuries-old stone and half-timbered cottages lining its streets. Just to the east is Castle Combe Circuit, a racetrack that arranges track events, retro race days and driving experiences.
If the massage on site has whetted your appetite for self-care, head to Bath (35 minutes), where the Thermae Bath Spa has a rooftop pool with spectacular views across the city, as well as a Wellness Suite with themed rooms. Afterwards, explore the Roman Baths or make your way to the Royal Crescent, a large semicircle of elegant Georgian homes.
Hot summer days call for water-based pursuits, and Cotswold Country Park & Beach (55 minutes) is just the place, with an inflatable adventure course, and paddleboard and pedalo hire. In the vicinity, there is also plenty of birdwatching action at Swillbrook Lakes, plus a sculpture park.
