Adjacent to the site is Winkworth Arboretum, a gorgeous National Trust-managed collection of shrubs and trees with a cosy tea rooms attached. If the slower pace of plant life is to your liking, branch out and try other leafy local spots like Vann Garden (15 minutes' drive) or Tilford Cottage Garden (25 minutes). For more wild landscapes, you could head to Box Hill (40 minutes) in the north of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where far-reaching views over the green countryside are well worth the ascent. There's also Frensham Great Pond (30 minutes), an attractive small lake surrounded by heathland where you can fish, take a warm-weather swim or tuck into a picnic on its small sandy beach. If you're here to see some heritage, there's Waverley Abbey (25 minutes), the old market town of Godalming (10 minutes) or the castles in Guildford (15 minutes) and Farnham (30 minutes). Stick around in Godalming if you fancy ambling through its water meadows or taking a relaxing cruise down the scenic river Wey.
