A glamping site within the grounds of a 17th-century mansion – how wonderful. That’s the setting for the bell tents at Kirklinton Hall and Gardens, in the Cumbria countryside a few miles south of the Scottish border. But there’s more to this story…
In fact, the estate’s main house has fallen into ruins and is currently in the process of being restored to its former glory. It’s a very attractive site, though – the derelict mansion is covered with climbing roses and several of the estate’s smaller buildings have been brought back to life already.
Meanwhile, a team of expert gardeners have worked wonders on the 12-acre estate’s grounds, bringing fresh life to the part-walled garden, orchard, flower maze and rose terraces among other areas. All in all, it’s a fabulous place to stay – a one-of-a-kind property packed with character.
Fittingly for a smart estate, the bell tents are equally lovely – they’re tucked away among the trees and each one has been kitted out with a kingsize bed, comfy chairs and lots of soft furnishings for a cosy experience. Outside, each tent has a firepit and outdoor seating for your atmospheric alfresco evenings.
Shared facilities – including toilets, showers and a cooking shack – are a short stroll away, and the main hall has a café serving lunches and some rather tempting afternoon teas. For self-catering supplies there are shops in Longtown (10 minutes’ drive) and Carlisle (20 minutes).

This is a nifty spot for getting out to explore the area – there’s plenty to see, whichever direction you choose to turn. For rural hikes, head east to the Northumberland National Park, south-east to the North Pennines National Landscape or south-west to the Lake District National Park – all three are within a half-hour to 40-minute drive.
Sticking to the English side of the border, there’s also plenty of heritage to take in at the likes of the Solway Aviation Museum (15 minutes’ drive), Carlisle Castle (20 minutes) and Hadrian’s Wall (25 minutes). If you’re on a family holiday, you may like to turn instead to places like Walby Farm Park (20 minutes) or Fusion Trampoline Park (25 minutes).
Crossing into Scotland, your first stop may well be Gretna (15 minutes), once famed as a wedding location and now home to a popular outlet shopping village. Nearby, The Devils Porridge museum (25 minutes) tells the story of the World War I munitions factory and you can learn all about whisky at Annandale Distillery (half an hour).
