With a spectacular south-facing position on the edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, Croscombe Camping overlooks open countryside and the pretty little village of Croscombe – and you can even glimpse Glastonbury Tor in the distance. This is relaxed and definitely wild camping, so simply turn up and pitch your tent wherever you like in the field. There’s masses of room for couples, families and their dogs (on a lead please), and while campfires and barbecues are allowed, please raise them off the ground to protect the grass. Simple facilities include hot showers and flushable loos. As long as it’s dry you can park next to your tent, and if not, there’s a car park on site. There are no bins though, so please take your rubbish home to recycle. You can get on to country walks right from the campsite, where you might get to see foxes, badgers, deer and rabbits, or bring your bikes and enjoy a cycle ride around quiet country lanes. It’s only a five-minute walk to the nearest pub, The George, which serves Somerset scrumpy cider along with excellent pub food, takeaways and pizza on Saturdays.

No em va agradar I did notice several caravans and motor homes on the site (which according to the booking page are not allowed), so was a little disappointed at that.

Em va agradar I'm a fairly low maintenance camper and this site was perfect. Clean and decent toilet and shower cubicles as well as a dishwashing area, all under cover of a barn roof so the entire area stays dry and sheltered in bad weather. Very convenient booking through pitchup, the people from the campsite seemed friendly and it's all set in beautiful countryside with some great views. I'll definitely be back next time I'm exploring this area.

No em va agradar Honestly, I loved my short visit here. This next bit is not anything to do with the campsite, but I do have to mention that the access roads are a little tricky. Very narrow and winding in places. If you get a little confused as to where the entrance is, I'd recommend ringing the campsite although if you're driving up the hill from the Rock Street/Thrupe Lane side, the entrance is on the left hand side, a little after the the entrance to Croscombe Cemetery.

Em va agradar It was a lovely campsite, very out the way, nice views and a very nice walk to Wells. The showers and toilets were particularly nice for a campsite.

No em va agradar There was only cold water for doing dishes and there wasn't a light in the showers but neither was really an issue.

Em va agradar Lovely site with fantastic views. Proper old style camping but with hot showers!
Really enjoyed our stay. Very convenient for the Shepton Flea Fair which was the main reason for our visit. We would be very happy to return.

Em va agradar The view was amazing. Showers were hot and powerful and there was lots of space. A great little spot. I'd certainly come again.

No em va agradar Only thing to watch out for was the long wet grass in the morning. It was lush and beautiful but also very dewy and I was glad to have waterproof shoes. It also made driving away a bit tricky. So keep that in mind when choosing a spot.

Em va agradar Amazing views, quiet site and loads of space. Basic facilities however had all we needed for a 1 night stay. Two good sized barns with sofas to relax on if it rained, was a nice offering.

Catch the Somerset history vibe with visits to the flamboyant, Gothic-era Wells Cathedral (10 minutes’ drive), and check out the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens too. Glastonbury (20 minutes) has an atmospheric abbey of its own, and loads of quirky little shops selling joss sticks and silver jewellery, while the darker side of local life is revealed on ghostly guided walks of Shepton Mallet Prison (10 minutes). Want to breathe in more of that fresh Somerset air? Scramble up to the top of Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes) for far-reaching views of the Somerset Levels (30 minutes), where you can spot wading birds on walks and cycles through sleepy villages. For more hardcore exercise, take a climbing course on the limestone cliffs of Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes). Animatronic dinosaurs, cave tours and mini golf may well keep kids entertained for much of the day at Wookey Hole Caves (15 minutes), or you can clamber aboard a steam train on the East Somerset Railway (15 minutes) to chug through the countryside. And if you’re holidaying with teens, pray they don’t know about Clarks Village (25 minutes), or they’ll be busy spending your retirement fund in the cut-price designer outlet stores.
