Croscombe Camping: View from the pitch

General

  • Wild camping with Glastonbury Tor views in Somerset’s Mendip Hills
  • A 10-minute drive to Wells, and 20 minutes from Glastonbury
  • Pop-up shop, wildlife and walks on site; pub a five-minute stroll away

With a spectacular south-facing position on the edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, Croscombe Camping overlooks open countryside and the pretty little village of Croscombe – and you can even glimpse Glastonbury Tor in the distance.

This is relaxed spot with the vibe of wild camping, so simply turn up and pitch your tent wherever you like in the field. There’s masses of room for couples, families and their dogs (on a lead please), and while campfires and barbecues are allowed, please raise them off the ground to protect the grass.

Left the grill at home? You can hire or buy one from the on-site pop-up shop, which is open daily (between 4pm and 6pm) and sells all the basics you’ll need for your stay

As well as the shop, simple facilities on site include reception, hot showers and flushable loos. As long as it’s dry you can park next to your tent, and if not, there’s a car park on site. There are no bins though, so please take your rubbish home to recycle.

You can get on to country walks right from the campsite, where you might get to see foxes, badgers, deer and rabbits, or bring your bikes and enjoy a cycle ride around quiet country lanes. It’s only a five-minute walk to the nearest pub serving Somerset scrumpy cider along with excellent pub food, takeaways and pizza on Saturdays.

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (excluding couples) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

There are no garbage cans onsite: all garbage will need to be taken home with you.

We stayed here over the weekend as we wanted a base camp not to far from Wooky Hole and Brean Sands. Site was excellent and sits in a nice location with great views over the surrounding countryside. There is a large barn on site which house's the facilities, altogether there are 3 toilets and 3 showers in total, the showers were nice and and hot with a good water pressure and all facilities were clean and well maintained. There is also a double sink washing up station on site which is extremely handy. The owner of the site was very friendly and helpful and was there to greet us on arrival, even though we arrived late evening. Signage to the site could be a little bit better, there is a sign on the entrance but a few signs on the approach to the site would be helpful but I am sure as the site continues to establish more signage will be provided. Overall this site is good value for money and I would definitely recommend.

View was great - lovely hot showers available. Nice pub at the bottom of hill which sold farm milk & eggs - nice food there too. Lovely walks all around as we had a dog with us. The owner was on site a few times a day always making sure toilets were clean.

    Disliked:

Got a bit windy at night so do take a wind break. Door handles kept falling off toilet doors and my teenager got stuck in the toilet for 20 mins. There was no pop up shop as stated but loads of supermarkets within 5-10 mins drive so no big deal really.

Local attractions

Catch the Somerset history vibe with visits to the flamboyant, Gothic-era Wells Cathedral (10 minutes’ drive), and check out the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens too. Glastonbury (20 minutes) has an atmospheric abbey of its own, and loads of quirky little shops selling joss sticks and silver jewellery, while the darker side of local life is revealed on ghostly guided walks of Shepton Mallet Prison (10 minutes).

Want to breathe in more of that fresh Somerset air? Scramble up to the top of Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes) for far-reaching views of the Somerset Levels (30 minutes), where you can spot wading birds on walks and cycles through sleepy villages. For more hardcore exercise, take a climbing course on the limestone cliffs of Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes).

Animatronic dinosaurs, cave tours and mini golf may well keep kids entertained for much of the day at Wookey Hole Caves (15 minutes), or you can clamber aboard a steam train on the East Somerset Railway (15 minutes) to chug through the countryside. And if you’re holidaying with teens, pray they don’t know about Clarks Village (25 minutes), or they’ll be busy spending your retirement fund in the cut-price designer outlet stores.

Must see

  • Wells Cathedral (4.5 kilometres)
  • Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (5.5 kilometres)
  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (6.9 kilometres)

National Trust

  • West Pennard Court Barn (8.7 kilometres)
