Croscombe Camping: Our camp all set up

General

  • Wild camping with Glastonbury Tor views in Somerset’s Mendip Hills
  • A 10-minute drive to Wells, and 20 minutes from Glastonbury
  • Pop-up shop, wildlife and walks on site; pub a five-minute stroll away

With a spectacular south-facing position on the edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, Croscombe Camping overlooks open countryside and the pretty little village of Croscombe – and you can even glimpse Glastonbury Tor in the distance.

This is relaxed and definitely wild camping, so simply turn up and pitch your tent wherever you like in the field. There’s masses of room for couples, families and their dogs (on a lead please), and while campfires and barbecues are allowed, please raise them off the ground to protect the grass.

Simple facilities include a reception, hot showers and flushable loos. As long as it’s dry you can park next to your tent, and if not, there’s a car park on site. There are no bins though, so please take your rubbish home to recycle.

You can get on to country walks right from the campsite, where you might get to see foxes, badgers, deer and rabbits, or bring your bikes and enjoy a cycle ride around quiet country lanes. It’s only a five-minute walk to the nearest pub, The George, which serves Somerset scrumpy cider along with excellent pub food, takeaways and pizza on Saturdays. The George also has a nifty shop inside where you can pick up any essentials you need for your stay. Handily, kindling and logs are sold on site.

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

There are no garbage cans onsite: all garbage will need to be taken home with you.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Fantastic views. Gloriously quiet. Delightfully basic.

This is extremely picky but...the gravel leading to the loos and washing up area is not suitable for walking barefooted, and requires shoes.

Lovely hosts, fantastic amenities and very clean, wonderful views, excellent pub in nearby town, short drive to Glastonbury. Also stayed one night in an on-site glamping tank! Very unusual and very comfortable.

    Disliked:

Would be good if there were some on-site bins. Keeping leftover meat etc for days to take it home in the car is not pleasant!

The views are amazing, as was the space and openness of the campsite. All the facilities were good and well thought out, the showers were great. Emma was friendly, helpful and very accomadating. We were a large group of 4 families with children.
The george inn in the local village is walkable- the food is amazing and there is an outside play area for the kids. We also did a daytrip to Glastonbury and the Tor which as a short drive.

Local attractions

Catch the Somerset history vibe with visits to the flamboyant, Gothic-era Wells Cathedral (10 minutes’ drive), and check out the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens too. Glastonbury (20 minutes) has an atmospheric abbey of its own, and loads of quirky little shops selling joss sticks and silver jewellery, while the darker side of local life is revealed on ghostly guided walks of Shepton Mallet Prison (10 minutes).

Want to breathe in more of that fresh Somerset air? Scramble up to the top of Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes) for far-reaching views of the Somerset Levels (30 minutes), where you can spot wading birds on walks and cycles through sleepy villages. For more hardcore exercise, take a climbing course on the limestone cliffs of Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes).

Animatronic dinosaurs, cave tours and mini golf may well keep kids entertained for much of the day at Wookey Hole Caves (15 minutes), or you can clamber aboard a steam train on the East Somerset Railway (15 minutes) to chug through the countryside. And if you’re holidaying with teens, pray they don’t know about Clarks Village (25 minutes), or they’ll be busy spending your retirement fund in the cut-price designer outlet stores.

Must see

  • Wells Cathedral (4.5 kilometers)
  • Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (5.5 kilometers)
  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (6.9 kilometers)
