Welcome to station farm

What a spot for wildlife lovers… Station Farm is a small family-run Somerset farm on the edge of Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve and situated between the Ham Wall and Westhay Moor Reserves (3,700 acres of reclaimed wetland collectively known as the Avalon Marshes). Bring your binoculars along for a stay here – you’re likely to spot all sorts of bird life (including cranes, egrets, birds of prey and kingfishers) around here, and there are several hides within a short walk for those who’d like to settle in for some serious spotting. If birdwatching’s not your thing, look out instead for otters, beavers and water voles or head out straight from the farm onto footpaths and bike routes across the reserves (including the Bittern Trail, which goes all the way to Glastonbury, five miles away). Just next to the farm is a river that’s fab for kayaking, paddleboarding, wild swims and fishing (permit required). Sticking to dry land, there’s plenty of space for kids to run about and greet the farm animals (ponies, sheep, pigs, donkeys and free-range poultry). Each pitch is provided with a barbecue/firepit (with logs and kindling available to buy) so you’ll also have space to keep warm once evening falls. This is an off-grid site so it’s a good idea to bring a torch along; toilets, showers, drinking water and a covered washing-up area are a short walk from each pitch. For safety, there’s no parking on pitches but wheelbarrows are provided to help haul kit. (Parents, do be aware that there’s easy access to lakes, ditches and the river so you’ll still need to keep an eye on the kids.)

喜欢 Excellent uncrowded site keeping cars away from the camp area except small camper vans. It felt like wild camping but with access to water and toilets.

不喜欢 Only slight issue was that shower and toilet are in the same unit and there are only two. I separate single toilet would help avoid a queue. But this is only a minor issue and did not distract from enjoying our stay.

喜欢 One of the most memorable places we stayed during our trip through England. ❤️

Station Farm is so much more than just a place to stay. It is wonderfully warm, quirky, creative, welcoming and full of character — the kind of place where you keep discovering something new around every corner.

We absolutely loved all the animals, the beautiful surroundings, the Forest School area and all the imaginative things that have been created from old and recycled materials. There is even a wonderful little outdoor kitchen for children — and, of course, the unforgettable pink double-decker bus! 😍🚌

We also loved the simple idea of keeping the cars away from the camping area and providing wheelbarrows so guests can transport their luggage the short distance from the car. Little details like this tell you a lot about the thought that has gone into the place.

Another incredibly generous touch was being able to help ourselves to the delicious produce they grow. Fresh home-grown food available for guests to enjoy, included in what was already a very reasonable price. 🌱❤️

But most of all, it was the atmosphere that made Station Farm so special. It feels genuine, unpretentious and full of life — a place created with imagination, hard work and a real love of nature, animals, children and the outdoors.

Some places are simply somewhere you sleep while travelling.

Others become part of the journey itself. Station Farm was definitely one of those places for us.

We drove past a huge sign during our travels saying “Please support the English farmers.” After staying at Station Farm, those words somehow meant even more.

We would happily recommend this very special place to others and would love to return one day. ❤️👩‍🌾👨‍🌾

If you need to get your bearings, a good place to start is at the Avalon Marshes Visitor Centre (five minutes’ walk) – there’s a café here too, so you can plan your walks over a cup of coffee. Beyond your immediate surroundings, there’s plenty more to see – perhaps beginning with an outing to Glastonbury (10 minutes’ drive/half an hour’s cycle) to stroll through the town and visit the abbey and the tor. Wells (20 minutes’ drive) is another urban centre that’s worth a wander, particularly if you stop in at Europe’s first Gothic-style cathedral. For outdoor days, go for a hike around Cheddar Gorge (20 minutes) or hit the beach in Burnham-on-Sea (20 minutes). The West Somerset Railway (45 minutes) is a good option if you fancy seeing some of the scenery at a leisurely pace. Other ways to fill your days? Well, maybe delving into the caves at Wookey Hole (20 minutes), visiting Europe’s largest naval aviation collection at Fleet Air Arm Museum (half an hour) or checking out the stately home and safari park at Longleat (50 minutes)…
