Want to feel like you’re getting a secluded and peaceful getaway without having to give up being close to other people? At Dartmoor Halfway Inn, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, South West England, you get the best of both worlds. Two minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Halfway Inn is well placed for exploration – you can walk, cycle, ride, canoe or climb your way around the park, travel from scenic village to scenic village, or learn about the history of the area. The site and pub are dog friendly too, so ramblers should feel free to bring their canine companions along for the walk. On site, kick back by the river Lemon, which passes just behind the campgrounds, or relax in the open green field – kids who aren’t quite ready to sit still for the evening can burn off any residual energy in the on-site playground. When the whole family is ready for dinner, stroll over to the Halfway Inn for a slap-up meal, then knock back a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine – or juice for the kids – and toddle back to where you’re spending the night less than 200 metres away. If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of other restaurants in Newton Abbot and within 10 minutes’ drive of Halfway Inn.

喜欢 The site was lovely really well presented everybody was so friendly and the food was exceptional

不喜欢 Unfortunately there does seem to be a problem with the sewage system the smell seems to be worse when the elsan point is used and there were no hot showers. But these can be sorted

喜欢 The Pub was friendly and served good 'pub' food. Staff were very pleasant and accommodating.

The pub was literally a few steps away from the camping site - a real bonus.

不喜欢 VERY (I mean a VERY) narrow driveway along to the (our) pitch.

The Caravan's jockey wheel had a real struggle on their thick gravel driveway and into (our) pitch - sinking into the gravel - putting a lot of pressure on the wheel.

For a full service pitch we booked, it was literally the smallest pitch on the campsite. If you wanted 'no' services (just a pitch) then the other pitches were a minimum of double the size in area.

The (male) toilet block had literally ONE toilet and two shower cubicles. For a campsite of this size, you'd expect more than one toilet.

To enter the site, there was no number plate recognition or anyone on the gate. Each time one had to press a 'call button' at the barrier - they would watch their monitor screen (from the pub's bar I assume), and then let you in.

喜欢 Easy to find off the main road, no narrow roads. Nice bays separated by hedges

不喜欢 Only one toilet for men one for women for the whole site. Needed at least 2 each

喜欢 Pitches were private and the pub was nice and the toilets/shower blocks were clean.

不喜欢 Massive gravel road through the whole campsite so really dusty, there is only one ladies toilet (the rest are portaloos) and the toilets REALLY smell.

You can barely turn a corner in this part of Devon without coming face to face with a stately manor – Bradley, Compton Castle, Greenway, Castle Drogo, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey and Dartington Hall are all with 45 minutes’ drive, and a visit to the spectacular 16-sided A la Ronde, 35 minutes away, is highly recommended. Tipplers might like to make the trip to Buckfast Abbey outside Buckfastleigh (10 minutes), though you won’t be able to do tours or tastings at the factory. If the Abbey doesn’t get you steaming, head to the South Devon Railway and climb aboard the vintage train, or abandon alcohol-related puns altogether and head to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. Fawlty Towers fans will be keen to learn that Torquay is less than 30 minutes away. Although you can no longer visit the real-life hotel behind the comedy, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: follow the Agatha Christie Mile to get a glimpse of some of the spots that inspired the murder mystery maven, dive below the Devon coast in the prehistoric Kents Cavern, or play giant at Babbacombe Model Village.
