Dartmoor Halfway Inn: River Lemon, which passes just behind the site

General

  • Riverside site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant
  • A couple of minutes’ drive from the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Abbot and 30 from Torquay

Want to feel like you’re getting a secluded and peaceful getaway without having to give up being close to other people? At Dartmoor Halfway Inn, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub-restaurant 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Newton Abbot in Devon, South West England, you get the best of both worlds.

Two minutes from the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Halfway Inn is well placed for exploration – you can walk, cycle, ride, canoe or climb your way around the park, travel from scenic village to scenic village, or learn about the history of the area. The site and pub are dog friendly too, so ramblers should feel free to bring their canine companions along for the walk.

On site, kick back by the river Lemon, which passes just behind the campgrounds, or relax in the open green field – kids who aren’t quite ready to sit still for the evening can burn off any residual energy in the on-site playground.

When the whole family is ready for dinner, stroll over to the Halfway Inn for a slap-up meal, then knock back a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine – or juice for the kids – and toddle back to where you’re spending the night less than 200 metres away.

If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of other restaurants in Newton Abbot and within 10 minutes’ drive of Halfway Inn.

The place is not too bad, unfortunately its so upsetting about the smelly area that comes from the toilet.

    Disliked:

So smelly around the area. It’s upsetting you can’t eat and enjoy your stay, especially when you have a sensitive stomach. My hubby has always had an epigastric pain due to bad smells especially that comes from the toilet.
Only one toilet and two shower room is not accommodate for the whole campers for 25 pitches.

The pub and the staff. WiFi was good as I had no signal on the campsite so pub WiFi was the only way I could get signal

    Disliked:

Toilet were dirty and the shower were very small and not cleaned regular.
Pitch 21 shouldn't be for twin axle caravan it's probably the tightest pitch on the campsite although I did request to be close to the pub !

Tidy clean well run site, great pub with generous opening hours (eg 8am for early starters). Pitches are a good size and hedges give some privacy. The site is well situated for Dartmoor and the coast. Staff are welcoming and very accommodating (eg we wanted to sit outside to eat even in a rain shower). Food is very good and there are a range of options to suit. This is our second stay here and we’ll definitely be back.

Pitch was lovely, location next to farm fields and river

    Disliked:

Noise from main road, smelly toilet and utility block with only one toilet per gender. Often needing to queue. Very disappointed by the pub/ restaurant: after a long days travel we popped in hoping for some food and a drink to be told we couldn’t order drinks at the bar we had to wait outside (others were being served at the bar) it was 7pm and we asked for a food menu but were told they are not serving for the time being as they have too many orders to process. We waited outside for 15 mins for someone to take our drinks order but nobody turned up. We went back inside and managed to get served at the bar with everyone else. We asked again about food but was not given any indication on when food may be ordered-if at all. We have never experienced this at a bar or restaurant before. We gave up and went back to camp hungry. Had we been told to reserve a table for food and drinks at the time of booking our pitch we would have done so. Thankfully we only had to stay the one night whilst passing through. We wouldn’t have wanted to have stayed any longer and wouldn’t again. It’s not like me to review negatively, I like to find the best in all situations but being left without food when there were half of the tables available at the restaurant felt unfair.

Local attractions

You can barely turn a corner in this part of Devon without coming face to face with a stately manor – Bradley, Compton Castle, Greenway, Castle Drogo, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington Court, Torre Abbey and Dartington Hall are all with 45 minutes’ drive, and a visit to the spectacular 16-sided A la Ronde, 35 minutes away, is highly recommended.

Tipplers might like to make the trip to Buckfast Abbey outside Buckfastleigh (10 minutes), though you won’t be able to do tours or tastings at the factory. If the Abbey doesn’t get you steaming, head to the South Devon Railway and climb aboard the vintage train, or abandon alcohol-related puns altogether and head to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary.

Fawlty Towers fans will be keen to learn that Torquay is less than 30 minutes away. Although you can no longer visit the real-life hotel behind the comedy, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: follow the Agatha Christie Mile to get a glimpse of some of the spots that inspired the murder mystery maven, dive below the Devon coast in the prehistoric Kents Cavern, or play giant at Babbacombe Model Village.

Must see
