As family-friendly and back to basics activities go, building sandcastles on the beach is at the top of many lists. And what could be better than the beach being a gorgeous mile-long stretch of golden Cornish sand, in the Cornwall National Landscape – and less than five minutes' walk from a family-friendly rural campsite overlooking it all? A few minutes' walk above the beach at Praa Sands, between Penzance and Helston on Cornwall’s south coast, is Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site, which prides itself as a park offering camping – and memory making – as it used to be. It’s a spacious park that’s been family-run since the 1950s and the committed team prides itself on keeping guests relaxed – probably not too difficult on a park overlooking Praa Sands… Higher Pentreath has space aplenty for kids to run around, and a shop on site for basics (and ice cream). Facilities include a toilet and shower block with free hairdryer, washing machine (small charge applies), covered washing up area, phone and laptop charging at reception, and ice pack freezing or supplying. A garage is half a mile away and a 24-hour supermarket within 10 minutes’ drive; there's also a pub, the Sandbar, right on Praa Sands, serving home-cooked Mediterranean-style meals and Sunday carvery alongside food theme and regular music nights.

喜欢 Liked flexibility to choose where we camped; loved the view and enjoyed the live entertainment on Friday evening.

不喜欢 Didn’t dislike anything, would suggest possibly putting up a sign informing campers of food van scheduled arrival and live entertainment. Lots of ladies toilets and showers but hot/ cold water fluctuated.

喜欢 Really good campsite. Would definitely stay again. The sea view was amazing. And the showers good. And the added burger van on site was a lovely treat.

不喜欢 Signal/wifi connection was poor. But that was literally the only thing.

喜欢 love the location easy walk to the beach (albeit a bit of a hill). Fields on a slope so you need chocs. Hot powerful showers, toilets clean. laid back feel and quiet. Arrival of bacon bap van on an august weekend was a lovely added bonus, as was the live entertainment early evening.

喜欢 Flat pitches, lots of room, some entertainment which was a bonus, nice views, great location, short walk down to the lovely beach.

不喜欢 Showers...not enough and a bit scruffy for the size of site, was pretty quiet luckily.
Maybe the check in could be a bit more friendly.... "Press bell and wait here...do not approach the bungalow" sign made us giggle a little but hey ho.

喜欢 The views and location. Super convenient for going into Penzance.
The washing up area was nice and clean and there was a good amount of sinks. With a washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer for you to use.

不喜欢 None of the fields are flat so if you’re in a tent that’s fun.
The toilet block was dirty and outdated.
The showers would go from freezing cold to absolutely scalding hot every few seconds. I physically couldn’t wash my hair under the hot water as it was burning my scalp. None of our party could get them to a consistent temperature and we tried a few different showers.

This is such a lovely part of Cornwall, on the south coast with the pristine beaches of Land’s End and the Lizard Peninsula, but also close to the big family attractions: for starters, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is 25 minutes' drive away. Praa Sands West is the closest of the two Praa Sands beaches to Higher Pentreath – within a third of a mile – but the other, Praa Sands East, is still well under a mile’s walk away and very doable even if you’re carrying your surfboard. Nearby Prussia Cove and Kenneggy Sands are quieter coves, Kennack Sands has a nature reserve to its east, and a must is Marazion, sheltered by the National Trust-managed island of St Michael's Mount 10 minutes’ drive from Higher Pentreath and looking over stupendously good-looking Mounts Bay. Take a boat from here to the island or go around the harbour and village on a guided tour (held on Tuesdays and Fridays). Once off the beach, the towns and villages of Cornwall are close to hand: the nearest to Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site is the ancient market town of Penzance (about 15 minutes' drive), home of the Penzance pirates in Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera (try and sing their shanties after a scrumpy).
