The town of Leyburn is often styled as the ‘gateway to the Yorkshire Dales’ – and it’s a fitting description, as it’s just a little way from the national park’s eastern border. Tucked away down a country lane about a mile from the town sits Cow Close Caravan and Camping, a small and friendly site that makes an excellent base for some time spent exploring the local scenery and all the attractions of North Yorkshire. This is a very attractive spot, looking out over quiet green farmland in all directions and with lots of wildlife around – you’ll often spot deer, hares and pheasants while on site. And it’s a well-located spot too, with a footpath leading to Leyburn for a good range of independent shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants. This area is prime territory for walkers, who can choose from all manner of trails, including gentle strolls along Leyburn Shawl or more extensive moorland walks up and around Penhill. Cyclists are well served too, with routes ranging from easy pedals to the Tour de France-worthy challenges of Buttertubs Pass. Beyond all that, you’ll also be able to visit castles, waterfalls and museums, and sample the famed cheeses of the Wensleydale Creamery. Back on site, you’ll be staying on spacious marked-out pitches (some of which have a gentle slope) and will have access to a large modern amenities block with toilets and hot showers, plus handy extras like large mirrors and plugs for hairdryers. There’s also a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point, and barbecues are available to hire. If you need help or local advice, just ask – there’s always someone around to lend a hand.

喜欢 We upgraded to a pod as the weather was really windy and cold. The pod was lovely our host was super and we really enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms had lovely hot water and everything was really clean.

喜欢 Great campsite, friendly owners, clean facilities and good size pitches with lovely views across the fields. Easy walk into Leyburn. Would definitely recommend. Also free WiFi and loads of information about the surrounding areas.

不喜欢 Washing up sink to have some hot water.
More showers and toilets for the size of the site, although at this time of year they weren't busy.

We have just had a new tap fitted, and it transpires that the hot and cold were fitted vice versa (hot to cold and cold to hot). This has now been rectified.
We find your comments and assumptions regarding the shower and toilet block unfounded.
We are pleased that you would recommend us to friends but obviously disappointed that you would not visit again.

Great little campsite would recommend it in a heart beat

喜欢 Loved the.camping pitch and how close we were to walks and the little town.
Emily was lovely and I thank them for the extra bit of cable we needed or th pitch.

不喜欢 Showers were not very hot during 3 night stay and it was a little chilly in the ablutions as no heating on (late September)

You’ll be in a great location for walks at lots of the park’s top spots, including Aysgarth Falls (20 minutes’ drive), Hardraw Force waterfall (35 minutes) and the lakeside Druid’s Temple (35 minutes). If walking doesn’t give you enough of an adrenaline hit, head to How Stean Gorge (45 minutes) for adventure activities including caving and gorge walking. Fancy a light bit of learning while you’re here? Start at the Dales Countryside Museum (half an hour) for an insight into local life, then move on to the Wensleydale Creamery (half an hour) to find out how the delicious cheese is created. There’s plenty of history to explore nearby too, in places like Bolton Castle (15 minutes) and the Bowes Museum (40 minutes). For a family day out, turn your attention to the likes of The Forbidden Corner (15 minutes), full of tunnels, follies and surprises, or Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park (35 minutes), home to rides and attractions for kids of all ages.
