Ramblers, fishing folk, families and their dogs – all are welcome at Stanfree Road Farm’s almost-wild campsite near Clowne and Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Set in rolling fields on a small working farm, this family-run site is a handy base for pottering around the Peak District, while keen anglers will probably want to stay behind and cast a line or two on the pond. The farm has a herd of friendly goats that guests can come and feed. At the handy family-run farm shop, you'll be able to pick up fresh eggs for a breakfast fry-up, as well as home-reared, grass-fed Aberdeen Angus beef for the evening barbecue (bring your own barbecue with you, ta). You don't need to look far for your morning coffee either, as the on-site ice cream parlour serves not just delicious ice creams but also freshly brewed barista coffees, matchas and a selection of food daily. For Hawkstone lagers and various other drinks, take yourself along to the family-friendly bar on site, which is open from Friday to Sunday. On those same days, there's a catering trailer that opens up between 5pm and 8.30pm for hot, cooked food (how handy if you're not in the mood to barbecue). Simple facilities out on the camping field include a toilet and shower block; there’s no lighting on site, so just make sure to bring along torches for the nighttime. Vehicles are allowed on the meadow for pitching and packing-up purposes only, leaving the campsite safe for kids (and dogs on leads) to play safely. Parking is provided adjacent to the field.

Angus 露营舱

喜欢 Lovely site on a farm, with friendly owners who also run a farm shop and coffee/ice cream stall. The pod was comfortable and warm, and had everything needed to make a simple meal. Round the clock hot water and comfy outdoor furniture on the private terrace were two outstanding features, along with the goats and alpacas for entertainment! Parking was right behind the pod, so no lugging stuff over long distances, and the toilet/shower block was not far away. I was lucky with the weather and had two fantastic days. It's a working farm and fairly close to the road so don't expect complete silence, but I found it peaceful and really enjoyed the view from my front door. Excellent value and a really great stay, with castles, stately homes, caves and country parks very nearby.

不喜欢 I was lucky enough to have the site to myself as the only camper. It could have been a very different experience if the next door pod had been occupied as it was very close - although not directly overlooked, we would definitely have heard each other. The owners run a bar on weekend nights and that, too, would be easily heard from the pod. Check before booking if this is likely to be an issue for you. The toilets and showers are unisex, which may bother some people, though there is one separate toilet cubicle with a full door and sink/bin inside if privacy is a concern.

Angus 露营舱

喜欢 We had a fantastic two-night stay at the lodge and couldn’t have asked for more. The lodge was perfect — cosy, comfortable and had everything we needed. It was really well insulated, which made it lovely and warm, and the TV was a great added touch.

Outside, the fire pit and seating area were perfect for relaxing in the evenings and really added to the experience. The staff were lovely, friendly and welcoming throughout our stay.

The onsite ice cream parlour was fantastic, as was the butchers, and the fishing lake was excellent — the perfect way to top off our stay. We also loved being able to go and feed the lovely animals onsite.

Everything was clean and well maintained, including the toilet facilities. Overall, a brilliant little getaway with everything you could need. We absolutely loved our stay and would definitely recommend it!

不喜欢 Very little storage in the pods but it’s expected and wouldn’t put me off from going again.

For active family days out in the fresh air, Clowne Branchline Greenway (15 minutes by bike) promises gentle rides along a former railway line. It links into the multi-use Archaeological Way, which passes old collieries on its way to the gorge and museum at Creswell Crags (both half an hour). There are more adventures to be had in the Peak District National Park (half an hour’s drive), like hiking along the banks of the River Derwent or maybe testing yourselves on a section of the Pennine Way from Edale (an hour). If you’d like to tick a few stately piles off your to-see list, the spectacular Chatsworth House (40 minutes) is open for tours of its sumptuous apartments and scenic walks through landscaped grounds. Nearby is majestic Hardwick Hall (20 minutes), where you can admire Elizabethan architecture at its best, while at hillside Bolsover Castle (10 minutes) there is a circular rampart walk with views over the Vale of Scarsdale. Still not had your fill of history? Head to Chesterfield (20 minutes) to marvel at the twisted steeple on the Crooked Spire church.
