  • Family-run campsite on a working farm near Clowne in Derbyshire
  • Half an hour’s drive to the Peak District; Chatsworth House 40 minutes
  • Fishing pond and farm shop; direct access to walks and bike rides
Ramblers, fishing folk, families and their dogs – all are welcome at Stanfree Road Farm’s almost-wild campsite near Clowne and Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Set in rolling fields on a small working farm, this family-run site is a handy base for pottering around the Peak District, while keen anglers will probably want to stay behind and cast a line or two on the pond. Please note: simple facilities out on the camping field stretch to a toilet and shower room; there’s no electricity and no drinkable running water so bring torches and a supply of water from home. What there is on site is a handy family-run farm shop, where you can pick up fresh eggs for a breakfast fry up, as well as home-reared, grass-fed Aberdeen Angus beef for the evening barbecue (again, bring one from home). Vehicles are allowed on the meadow for pitching and packing up purposes only, leaving the campsite safe for kids (and dogs on leads) to play safely. Parking is provided adjacent to the field.

Angus camping pod

Liked: Great relaxing space, we stayed in the Angus camping pod for two nights. It was very well equipped with a lovely little welcome hamper with cobs/milk/tea,coffee,sugar/biscuits etc, the beds were very comfy and it had everything you could need for a short stay. The farm staff were all lovely and our daughter enjoyed seeing the horse and chickens/hens. The firepit with the wood and firelighters is also a great addition. Close by to some lovely sights/walks and a supermarket if needed.

Disliked: The fairy lights weren’t working around the pod so it was very dark at night (wasn’t much of an issue as we had torches) however would have been a nice touch for a cosy feel.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: We loved this site, literally loved it! This is a working farm, which my boys thought was excellent! The owners are lovely, really friendly and helpful. On site is a farm shop selling their beautiful Aberdeen Angus produce as well as eggs amongst other things, the staff here are super helpful too. The coffee machine was also a welcome sight. Its such a tranquil site, rolling green field, cows as neighbours and waking up to chickens in the morning. There is a lake at the edge of the camping field which other guests were fishing, its was great to sit by, eat a picnic and feed the couple of resident ducks. The location is ace Bolsover Castle is just up the road and the Peak District is a short drive away. Chatterley house is nearby and its close to the M1 for exploring further afield. Handily Tesco is five minutes away, opposite a Lidl (so drinking water isn't a problem (there isn't any on-site)) In the town of Clowne which also has a range of other facilities and amenities Whilst there is no WIFI, 02 signal on the campsite was good/great, we were getting 4G with quick downloads speeds for our full visit I cannot rate Stanfree Road Farm highly enough

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: The field was next to a farm so my little boy absolutely loved it , they also had a farm shop on site and the produce was fantastic. Luckily we picked a nice day weather wise so was able to do some fishing. If you go to this site please remember to take water as no water on site.

Local attractions

For active family days out in the fresh air, Clowne Branchline Greenway (15 minutes by bike) promises gentle rides along a former railway line. It links into the multi-use Archaeological Way, which passes old collieries on its way to the gorge and museum at Creswell Crags (both half an hour). There are more adventures to be had in the Peak District National Park (half an hour’s drive), like hiking along the banks of the River Derwent or maybe testing yourselves on a section of the Pennine Way from Edale (an hour). If you’d like to tick a few stately piles off your to-see list, the spectacular Chatsworth House (40 minutes) is open for tours of its sumptuous apartments and scenic walks through landscaped grounds. Nearby is majestic Hardwick Hall (20 minutes), where you can admire Elizabethan architecture at its best, while at hillside Bolsover Castle (10 minutes) there is a circular rampart walk with views over the Vale of Scarsdale. Still not had your fill of history? Head to Chesterfield (20 minutes) to marvel at the twisted steeple on the Crooked Spire church.
