Hankering for a stunningly rugged landscape full of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities? On a working farm within the Peak District National Park, Castleton Camping is the place to be. Regardless of whether you've come here to scale Mam Tor, the high peak a mile and a half from the site that’s accessible via a footpath, or whether you simply fancy a change of scenery, a stay at this laidback rural site opens up ample possibilities. This place is half a mile from the small village of Castleton, which is well-served by pubs and cafés. It’s a peaceful area and those of you who like your breaks full of rural hikes will be happy to find that there’s great access to local footpaths, many of which can be reached straight from the farm gates. If you need a light bite before you set off down yonder, a small pop-up café just next to the site is open on weekends for snacks. The amenities here are simple, with just a toilet block and drinking water point. Self-sustaining guests are welcome to set up campfires and barbecues. Castleton Camping also embraces well-behaved dogs but asks that they are kept on a lead at all times when around the site.

喜欢 Beautiful camp site. Very peaceful. Owner was very polite and welcoming. Toilets were very clean and tidy. Would recommend to anyone.

喜欢 Such a good spot, near Castleton about 10 mins walk, near the start of a walk up to mam tor beautiful views

Toilets were clean and modern, honesty box was a lovely idea my children both bought a small chocolate bar and though it was great!

喜欢 It's a great spot with good views! Clean toilet facilities, good ease of use of the camp site!

不喜欢 No shower facilities, so if you're gonna stay for a couple days or more I'd bring some form of wash system with you

喜欢 I liked that the campsite is large and has an amazing 360 view when you get up on the morning.

不喜欢 The only downside is lack of shower. Even just a cold outdoor shower attached to toilet block.

喜欢 Good, quiet location. Easy to find, though narrow road up the campsite. About 15 min walk into Castleton. No noise experienced on site after 10pm. Nice little touch with the “honesty box” supplies with sweets/chocolate/crisps & drinks.
Sufficient toilet role supplies and toilets kept clean.

不喜欢 No point of contact when we arrived so wasn’t sure if we could just pitch up where we wanted. This appears to be the case and we found a suitable
Spot. Someone came around later in the evening to check us in. Maybe needs more toilets/pot washing space as I noticed big queues in the morning and late evening.

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
