Hankering for a stunningly rugged landscape full of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities? On a working farm within the Peak District National Park, Castleton Camping is the place to be. Regardless of whether you've come here to scale Mam Tor, the high peak a mile and a half from the site that’s accessible via a footpath, or whether you simply fancy a change of scenery, a stay at this laidback rural site opens up ample possibilities. This place is half a mile from the small village of Castleton, which is well-served by pubs and cafés. It’s a peaceful area and those of you who like your breaks full of rural hikes will be happy to find that there’s great access to local footpaths, many of which can be reached straight from the farm gates. If you need a light bite before you set off down yonder, a small pop-up café just next to the site is open on weekends for snacks. The amenities here are simple, with just a portable toilet available, but self-sustaining guests are welcome to set up campfires and barbecues. Please note that Castleton Campsite does not have running water. Castleton Camping also embraces well-behaved dogs but asks that they are kept on a lead at all times when around the site.

喜欢 Great little campsite! It’s basic, but everything it has is clean and tidy.
When we arrived there was a pop up coffee van outside, didn’t try it but looked nice.
Showers would finish this site off perfectly.

喜欢 Fantastic location. Short 15 minute walk to Castleton and right on the hiking trails to mam tor and the great ridge.

不喜欢 Although always clean, could do with a couple more toilets for busy weekends.

喜欢 Stayed 2 nights this time, great location for a hiking base and very useful to just be able to pitch up and check in later. Facilities are basic but all you need for a night or 2 stay, honesty box and coffee van on a weekend is a nice touch.

不喜欢 Despite it being a quiet site and no noise after 10:30pm, the first night was very noisy and I found it hard to get to sleep with people still talking loudly at 1am. Thankfully 2nd night was much better.

喜欢 The setting is lovely. Great place. Make sure you take your blocks if you’re in a car/van.
The toilets were cleaned twice a day. Always toilet roll. Enjoyed the stay.
Very basic but lovely.
Short walk into Castleton where there are pubs galore.

不喜欢 There was a group of lads that were very noisy but the owner did contact them and tell them to shut up.

The road in is hard work if you meets other cars.

喜欢 Sooo peaceful and amazing views!
Not a busy campsite which was lovely, it felt very private and there was zero noise, you’re surrounded by amazing views in every direction. Toilets were very clean and well stocked!
20 min walk into casltleton which has some great pubs and cafes, also very close to so many amazing walks in the peaks. Definitely will be back!

不喜欢 Although there aren’t many people at the site it could do with a couple more toilets as there can be a bit of a wait in the mornings.
Would be great if there was potential for a few showers in the future so we can stop more than one night😊

喜欢 Everything! The site is immaculate and situated in the most amazing spot in the lee of Mam Tor. The facilities are basic but that is exactly what we want. We will most definitely return.

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
