Explore the scenic Isère with trips to some of the department’s most spectacular villages, towns and building, starting with Château Delphinal then the 15th-century covered market and the Augustine convent at Crémieu. The medieval tower and views of Le Bugey and the Alps in the ‘city of painters’ at Morestel, both 10 minutes’ drive away, are also much recommended. Take a peek at the Romanesque frescoes in the abbey at Saint-Chef, 15 minutes from the site, or pile in the car for road trips to stunning Château de Virieu and Chambéry’s Château des Ducs de Savoie, both around an hour away. Step away from history to keep the kids entertained at Walibi theme park, Parc de Moidière and Domaine des Fauves zoos, or by mooching around underground at the caves of La Balme (all less than half an hour away), then entertain the grownups with a trip to the Chartreuse cellars.
