Lowther Holiday Park

Gostou Pitch size was great, toilet facilities were better than expected after reading previous reviews. There was hot water available.
The site is a lovely picturesque place and the atmosphere was great for families.

Não gostou The only let down was that the pub is shut on a Tuesday and Wednesday (we were only there on a Wednesday) and the games room for children was also closed which our kids were all looking forward to.

Gostou The kids enjoyed playing with the other children.

The toilets were disgusting and cleaned once in 3 days.
The pub didn't serve food and closed all dayy Tuesday and Wednesday.

The play parks are very run down overall it isn't a holiday park in any sense of the word. We felt utterly robbed and left early. Don't waste your money.

Dog shit everywhere on the grass which was then trampled through my camper, which i then had to scrub and disinfect my carpets

Não gostou We were pretty disappointed with the site. The positions of the toilet/shower blocks are awkward- quite a trek for those tent pitches ( closer to the holiday homes and caravans which seems odd considering they are likely to not need them as much). Also toilet/shower blocks were not cleaned at all - we were there from the Sunday lunchtime till Wednesday morning. I know they weren’t clean as the same empty bottle rubbish and muck around the sinks and in the toilets were there the whole time. Also, children on electric scooters/ mini quad bikes with no parents watching them- really concerning due to there still being cars coming in and out all day. One child was on the quad bike well after 10 at night - beeping the horn constantly- staff at site should be monitoring this. Overall disappointed.

Gostou If you’re looking for a campsite with beautiful scenery, peaceful woodland walks, a lovely river, and stunning views… this place absolutely delivers. Nature? 10/10. Facilities? Well… character building.

The location is brilliant for days out too - all within easy reach. There’s also a decent little play park and drinking water available near the pitches, which was handy because after wrestling our tent pegs into solid rock, hydration became essential.

Não gostou The tent pitches themselves were less ‘peaceful camping experience’ and more ‘extreme off-road survival challenge’. Every tent peg insertion felt like an archaeological excavation and finding a genuinely flat bit of ground became our own personal Glastonbury myth.

The pitches were also crammed together so tightly we practically became part of our neighbours’ family holiday. By day two, I knew what they were having for tea, whose child refused to sleep, and who’d forgotten the ketchup. Intimate doesn’t even cover it.

Now, the toilets deserve a very special mention. Firstly, they appear to be located in an entirely different postcode from the campsite itself, so prepare for a full expedition every time nature calls. Sherpas and a packed lunch recommended.

There was rarely any toilet roll and, when there was, it was that horrible budget stuff that somehow manages to simply rearrange your problems rather than solve them. Massive shoutout to the heroic camper who personally went out and bought several proper toilet rolls for the rest of us. The true MVP of the campsite.

The toilets and showers also appeared to be participating in a bold 4-night ‘self-cleaning experiment’. Spoiler alert: they lost. Spectacularly. Bring wet wipes, deodorant and perhaps a hazmat suit… bring plenty.

The rules proudly state ‘NO fire pits or music’, which was adorable considering absolutely nobody followed them. Honestly, had I realised the rules were more of a light-hearted suggestion, I’d have brought DJ decks, a smoke machine and enough wood for a bonfire. Nobody would’ve stopped me anyway because there was seemingly nobody around to actually say ‘no.’

The advertised on-site shop also deserves recognition for remaining firmly closed during our entire stay. I can only assume it operates on a witness-protection-style ‘need to know’ basis.

Then there’s the washing-up area: no hot water, no water pressure, permanently clogged with mud, twigs and leftover food. Washing pots became less ‘washing up’ and more ‘medieval peasant simulation’. I half expected someone to hand me a washboard and ration card.

Finally, the overflowing bin areas added a lovely pungent aroma to the atmosphere - especially on warmer days when the scent really had a chance to mature properly. Absolutely fantastic if you enjoy notes of ‘festival skip’ with your morning coffee.

* Excellent location for exploring nearby attractions such as Penrith, Rheged, Carlisle and local hiking routes

Não gostou * The toilet facilities were disappointing — often unhygienic, rarely stocked with toilet paper, and when there was some, it resembled the tracing-paper-style toilet roll from an 80’s primary school. During our 4-night stay, the toilets and showers didn’t appear to be cleaned at all. Bring plenty of wet wipes!
* Be prepared for a trek to the toilet block — it’s quite a walk from the tent pitches, especially at night.
* The tent pitches were far from level and full of rocks, making it difficult to get pegs into the ground.
* Pitches felt far too cramped and close together.
* The site rules state “no fire pits or music”, but these rules were largely ignored and there didn’t seem to be any staff monitoring the site. Had we known this beforehand, we’d have brought our own fire pit too.
* The on-site shop was advertised on Pitchup as available, but it never opened during our stay.
* The washing-up area was poor — no hot water, very little water pressure, and it seemed most people were using it to clean muddy boots rather than dishes.
* Refuse areas were overflowing and smelled unpleasant.

Overall, it’s a shame because the park itself has so much potential. The surroundings are genuinely lovely, but the site feels much more geared towards caravans and mobile homes. The tent pitches seem like an afterthought — almost as though someone looked at a spare patch of land and thought, ‘We may as well advertise it as a campsite’.
