Pick a hammock in the trees or a place to lay down underneath the sky and make time to relax, stargaze and get back to the basics… in between your wild swimming and paddleboarding, that is, because Wild Combe Camping in West Sussex has two private reservoirs for the sole use of their guests. This small, rural site tucked away in the South Downs National Park has no electricity (just the stars and the odd festoon lights hanging around). This is very much a family-focused site (furry friends included) all about making memories. What memories might these be? Well, perhaps nights around the firepit (the site sells logs from their felled trees for these) and paddleboarding on one of the two reservoirs (one is a short walk across a sleeper bridge and the other across a field). It'll surely include showering under the oak trees in a small copse with four bucket showers too. There’s a splendid copse for children to have adventures, as well as a rope swing and hammocks in the trees, and handy girls and boys’ loos. When you don’t fancy yet another barbecue, walk five minutes to the pub in Elsted village, which has views of the rolling South Downs, local beer and excellent food. The fuel will come in handy for all the walks in the South Downs – the South Downs Way is easily accessed five minutes’ drive away at Beacon Hill. Petersfield (15 minutes’ drive) to the west and Midhurst (10 minutes) to the east are places to sort any other essentials. When you budding explorers aren’t here, the fields go back to the way they were, and nature takes back control. That means you’re likely to see lots of wildlife. If you’re lucky this might include bouncy deer, super-fast hares, pheasants, herons by the reservoirs and frogs that have made their way over the fields and hedgerows in search of a watery home.

Een geliefde, ruime camping voor een rustige natuurvakantie. Geprezen om mooie omgeving, zwem/paddleboard-reservoir en zonnebloemvelden. Vriendelijk personeel. Basis, schone faciliteiten (emmerdouches/portaloos). Sommigen vonden portaloos ver weg, enkelingen meldden problemen met douches/reservoir. Nabijgelegen pub is een plus.

Ik was blij met Love this site. 4th visit. Peaceful, very beautiful - lots of space between pitches. Access to the reservoirs for swimming and boarding was much appreciated on a very hot day. 10 mins stroll to a great pub with fab views. Super helpful and friendly welcome from Lesley who's on hand to make sure you have a great stay.

Ik was blij met Great site, we loved it and the added bonus of the reservoir. We lucked out on weather so the bucket showers were refreshing. Plus Lyndsey and her team were so welcoming and friendly.

Ik was niet blij met The loos but the rest of the site made up for it!

Ik was blij met The Tennis Wells pitch we had was great, all the family fitted in with a nice seating area under the trees for shade. we would book it again.
The kids really enjoyed the woods & space. It felt really safe for them to play.
The facilities were good and a bonus for a wild camping site. We have had nothing and allot worse!
The lake was a bonus & fantastic for paddle boarding and swimming.
Great views and an easy walk into the beautiful village. - Nice pub with good views.
Thanks to Lyndsay and her team for their friendliness, support and generally showing us the way. We will come again and recommend to our friends & Family.

Ik was niet blij met The lake was a bonus & fantastic for paddle boarding and swimming but the kids were put off a bit by the slippery clay/mud and jumping fish. Honestly I didn't mind. It was nice to be able to cool down!

Ik was blij met Went as family group with my kids and their children and brother and sister. Fantastic site, the setting is beautiful. Really in the thick of nature. Loads of space. Added bonus of lake especially as went on the heatwave may bank holiday. Amenities are basic but good. Cleanest chemical loos I've ever been to. Lovely owner who was very friendly and eager to know if everything was alright. The 2 lads bringing round the wood and boards were great, very efficient and polite. We will be back!

Ik was blij met Reservoir was really lovely, the view of the sunflower fields as soon as we stepped outside our tent was incredible, facilities were well maintained and the camp was not overcrowded/allowed to be overbooked meaning everyone had plenty of space between one another.

Site, bookings and facilities all very well managed by Lyndsay and the boys - we will definitely be back!

Ik was blij met Really awesome, well run & dog friendly site.
Facilities while basic (all I wanted & to be honest all that is needed) are well kept/clean and access to fresh water.
Lots of areas for walks & reservoir you can swim in.

Ik was blij met The campsite was clean, well-maintained, and surrounded by stunning scenery—perfect for walking, stargazing, and soaking up nature or just relaxing. One of the highlights was easy access to a beautiful lake, where we spent hours swimming and paddle boarding. It was the perfect way to cool off and enjoy the sunshine.

Great location, facilities were basic but functional, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We loved the peaceful atmosphere and the chance to unplug for a bit.

Your time in the South Downs might take you to valleys, farm parks and historic estates… the National Trust’s Harting Down (10 minutes’ drive) is a peaceful pocket of wildlife with plenty of wildflowers and valley views. Sky Park Farm (10 minutes) is another place for wildlife fans – the deer farm has opportunities to get up and close with the herds, as well as playgrounds and a farm shop. While you’re here, you might want to catch a horse or motor race at the Goodwood Motor Circuit (25 minutes), or have your own driving experience over the circuit. Cowdray House (15 minutes) has a fine range of activities across its country estate, including golf, clay pigeon shooting, fly fishing or polo lessons. What else? Paddleboarding, surfing or swimming from the West Wittering Estate (45 minutes)? There’s also a popular pilgrimage route to Chichester Cathedral (25 minutes).
