Pick a hammock in the trees or a place to lay down underneath the sky and make time to relax, stargaze and get back to the basics… in between your wild swimming and paddleboarding, that is, because Wild Combe Camping in West Sussex has two private reservoirs for the sole use of their guests. This small, rural site tucked away in the South Downs National Park has no electricity (just the stars and the odd festoon lights hanging around). This is very much a family-focused site (furry friends included) all about making memories. What memories might these be? Well, perhaps nights around the firepit (the site sells logs from their felled trees for these) and paddleboarding on one of the two reservoirs (one is a short walk across a sleeper bridge and the other across a field). It'll surely include showering under the oak trees in a small copse with four bucket showers too. There’s a splendid copse for children to have adventures, as well as a rope swing and hammocks in the trees, and handy girls and boys’ loos. When you don’t fancy yet another barbecue, walk five minutes to the pub in Elsted village, which has views of the rolling South Downs, local beer and excellent food. The fuel will come in handy for all the walks in the South Downs – the South Downs Way is easily accessed five minutes’ drive away at Beacon Hill. Petersfield (15 minutes’ drive) to the west and Midhurst (10 minutes) to the east are places to sort any other essentials. When you budding explorers aren’t here, the fields go back to the way they were, and nature takes back control. That means you’re likely to see lots of wildlife. If you’re lucky this might include bouncy deer, super-fast hares, pheasants, herons by the reservoirs and frogs that have made their way over the fields and hedgerows in search of a watery home.

Lovely, tranquil spot in nature. Spacious pitches, reservoir's a hit for swimming/SUP. Friendly staff, fire pits, pub nearby. Basic bucket showers/portaloos suit the 'wild' vibe for most. Slippery paths when wet, occasional loo roll issues. Management looking at upgrades.

Liked The views, the size of pitch (huge!) the environmentally-friendly facilities like the incredibly refreshing and revitalising bucket showers, surrounding walks, the sunflowers filling the neighbouring fields, the hammock seat, the firepit and wood (great value for two nights camping we thought) and the three horseshoes pub

Disliked Small thing, but not all loos had sanitiser topped up. After our first day I had to keep popping into one of the two other loos adjacent to get some to clean my hands

Liked Reservoir was really fun, kids had a great time. Atmosphere at camp site was very fily friendly. Staff super helpful. Aromatic leaves in the portable loos was a nice addition as they were quite smelly in the heat.

Disliked The bucket showers were very cold but that can't be helped.

Liked Quiet campsite and great facilities

Disliked The water level in the lakes was a bit low which made it hard to get in and out. Maybe a floating jetty would be popular to allow people to get in and out without getting covered in clay!

Liked Really lovely wild campsite. The facilities are basic but thought through to make the place feel very homely and cared for. The reservoir was wonderful and still had plenty of water in it for swimming and paddleboarding. The pub, walking distance, has beautiful views over the country side. Lots of great small touches for the kids to explore such as rope swings and hammocks. The team drove round every day selling wood or to answer any queries which was also really helpful.

Liked Myself, husband & children had the best time at Wild Combe Camping, the location is beautiful right next to woods & wild flower fields. The lake was low but still 5ft deep so perfect with paddle boards (I must say, take swim shoes as the clay around lake is very slippery with crocs & flip flops!) Lyndsay & team made us feel so welcome the whole time & we’re very helpful. Plenty of water available, outdoor showers very really a lovely experience & toilets extremely clean. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole stay & will be back again, for longer next time! Thanks very much x

Liked We had an amazing time, we loved the novelty of the bucket showers and spent hours swimming and paddle boarding in the reservoir.
Met the host, Lyndsey I believe but I have a terrible memory, and she was lovely, very welcoming and informative and on hand if we needed anything.
Loved the 5 minute walk through the field to the pub for dinner. Can’t recommend it enough.

Liked Really friendly owners who welcomed you to the site and were very helpful if needed and completely non-intrusive during our stay. The water levels were low on the reservoir but that didn't stop us and the kids having lots of fun and get a bit mucky with the clay. Quiet campsite with tons of space. The loos are portaloos but we're kept clean throughout our stay and have some nice herb bunches so they weren't stinky! The hay bails and tree swings were also nice touches to keep kids entertained. Walk up to the pub was well signposted and the pub had great food.

Disliked There isn't a local shop within easy walking distance but that wasn't a big deal.

Your time in the South Downs might take you to valleys, farm parks and historic estates… the National Trust’s Harting Down (10 minutes’ drive) is a peaceful pocket of wildlife with plenty of wildflowers and valley views. Sky Park Farm (10 minutes) is another place for wildlife fans – the deer farm has opportunities to get up and close with the herds, as well as playgrounds and a farm shop. While you’re here, you might want to catch a horse or motor race at the Goodwood Motor Circuit (25 minutes), or have your own driving experience over the circuit. Cowdray House (15 minutes) has a fine range of activities across its country estate, including golf, clay pigeon shooting, fly fishing or polo lessons. What else? Paddleboarding, surfing or swimming from the West Wittering Estate (45 minutes)? There’s also a popular pilgrimage route to Chichester Cathedral (25 minutes).
