Hankering for a stunningly rugged landscape full of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities? On a working farm within the Peak District National Park, Castleton Camping is the place to be. Regardless of whether you've come here to scale Mam Tor, the high peak a mile and a half from the site that’s accessible via a footpath, or whether you simply fancy a change of scenery, a stay at this laidback rural site opens up ample possibilities. This place is half a mile from the small village of Castleton, which is well-served by pubs and cafés. It’s a peaceful area and those of you who like your breaks full of rural hikes will be happy to find that there’s great access to local footpaths, many of which can be reached straight from the farm gates. If you need a light bite before you set off down yonder, a small pop-up café just next to the site is open on weekends for snacks. The amenities here are simple, with just a toilet block and drinking water point. Self-sustaining guests are welcome to set up campfires and barbecues. Castleton Camping also embraces well-behaved dogs but asks that they are kept on a lead at all times when around the site.

Deze eenvoudige camping ligt prachtig aan de voet van Mam Tor, met adembenemend uitzicht en gemakkelijke toegang tot wandelroutes en Castleton. Gasten prijzen de schone faciliteiten en behulpzame eigenaren. Soms druk en winderig, maar ruime plekken. Geen douches, wel een eerlijkheidsbox.

Ik was blij met Brilliant site and surroundings, a true sense of freedom thanks to not having to formally check in and the ability to pick your parking spot.

Ik was niet blij met Only thing missing for us was not being able to have a safe contained fire or bbq, although this was due to the incredibly dry recent weather and probable safety guidelines being enforced in the area. Absolute perfection if it wasn’t for that.

Ik was blij met Lovely location with gorgeous views. Very narrow lane leading to site but we don’t pass anything whilst on it and it only goes to the site so no through traffic. Toilet block very clean. Honey box is a lovely touch and you can pay by cash and card.

Ik was niet blij met Long wet grass, this Site is a farm field so grass needed for animals after camping season, hence not cut short, very wet to walk through in the mornings. Some flat pitches but also sloped so levelling ramps needed.

Ik was blij met The location of this campsite is fantastic with great views of Mam Tor and surrounding area, and 1 mile walk into the village. There was plenty of space to pitch with being too close to others. Whilst the campsite is basic and has no showers, it was nicely maintained, spotless toilets, and some nice finishing touches to make you feel at home, like washing up liquid and paper towels for drying.

Ik was blij met We really loved this site. It was easy to get into Castleton from here. The toilet and washing up facilities were lovely and clean and the views were beautiful. We had a great time.

Ik was blij met Such a good spot, near Castleton about 10 mins walk, near the start of a walk up to mam tor beautiful views

Toilets were clean and modern, honesty box was a lovely idea my children both bought a small chocolate bar and though it was great!

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
