Hankering for a stunningly rugged landscape full of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities? On a working farm within the Peak District National Park, Castleton Camping is the place to be. Regardless of whether you've come here to scale Mam Tor, the high peak a mile and a half from the site that’s accessible via a footpath, or whether you simply fancy a change of scenery, a stay at this laidback rural site opens up ample possibilities. This place is half a mile from the small village of Castleton, which is well-served by pubs and cafés. It’s a peaceful area and those of you who like your breaks full of rural hikes will be happy to find that there’s great access to local footpaths, many of which can be reached straight from the farm gates. If you need a light bite before you set off down yonder, a small pop-up café just next to the site is open on weekends for snacks. The amenities here are simple, with just a toilet block and drinking water point. Self-sustaining guests are welcome to set up campfires and barbecues. Castleton Camping also embraces well-behaved dogs but asks that they are kept on a lead at all times when around the site.

Deze eenvoudige camping biedt een prachtig uitzicht en een ideale uitvalsbasis voor het verkennen van Mam Tor en Castleton, met lokale voorzieningen op loopafstand. Gasten prijzen de vriendelijke eigenaren en de schone, goed onderhouden faciliteiten. Veel ruimte, maar sommigen merken oneffen terrein en af en toe geluid van medekampeerders op. Geen douches.

Ik was blij met Firstly, you simply cannot please everyone. It’s impossible. Some people will complain no matter what, even when things have been made very clear. It has been stated countless times that there are no showers. There was also a tap for drinking water, although obviously it wasn’t inside the toilet block 😂 — it was about 10 metres away.

Apart from that, the location is fantastic. The host is genuinely lovely, and the toilet facilities are spotless — unless, of course, people leave them in a mess themselves.

Around 12:30am, I had to call the host because a group of people were being exceptionally loud and inconsiderate. She came over straight away and spoke to them. I also noticed her checking again around 3am. Some people may still find things to complain about, but you have to be fair: there is only so much a host can do.

What impressed me was that she was back again around 8am, cleaning the toilet area, and then running her little trailer shop.

Genuinely, if you’re looking for a good camping experience, this is a fantastic place. But if you’re determined to look for problems, you’ll find them anywhere.

Ik was blij met The owner was lovely, the toilets were kept clean and tidy. There were two honesty boxes that were full of goodies.

The view was amazing too, easy access to mam tor from the campsite and a short 15 minute drive to ladybower. The campsite was also pretty easy to find as well. 25 minute walk to castleton center as well, plenty of pubs and food.

Wasn’t particularly busy but I think that’s due to the bad weather, the site is big anyway and plenty of flat spaces to pitch up.

Me and my partner would 100% stay at this campsite again, hopefully it won’t rain next time.

Ik was blij met My favourite campsite! Perfect location, great views and lovely walk into Castleton with nice pubs. Very family friendly and quiet. Toilets are always spotless. Excellent view of the stars at night as well

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
