  • Working farm site in the Peak District with far-reaching views
  • A mile and a half from Mam Tor via a path; Castleton a mile
  • Next to a pop-up café (open weekends); dogs allowed
Hankering for a stunningly rugged landscape full of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities? On a working farm within the Peak District National Park, Castleton Camping is the place to be. Regardless of whether you've come here to scale Mam Tor, the high peak a mile and a half from the site that’s accessible via a footpath, or whether you simply fancy a change of scenery, a stay at this laidback rural site opens up ample possibilities. This place is half a mile from the small village of Castleton, which is well-served by pubs and cafés. It’s a peaceful area and those of you who like your breaks full of rural hikes will be happy to find that there’s great access to local footpaths, many of which can be reached straight from the farm gates. If you need a light bite before you set off down yonder, a small pop-up café just next to the site is open on weekends for snacks. The amenities here are simple, with just a portable toilet available, but self-sustaining guests are welcome to set up campfires and barbecues. Please note that Castleton Campsite does not have running water. Castleton Camping also embraces well-behaved dogs but asks that they are kept on a lead at all times when around the site.

What customers say

Great views, ideal for Mam Tor and Castleton. Spacious, clean, friendly owners. Appreciated the basic feel, though no drinking water/showers. Some noted noise and animal muck. Highly recommended for location and views.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Beautiful setting, great views across the valley a short walk to Castleton. Pitches well kept soft grass with some separation from hawthorn hedgerows. A slight slope in places but not a problem. Toilets and washing up area clean and look new.

Disliked One large family group across the field incessant, fairly loud talking from very early in morning - disturbed a peaceful setting while everyone else seemed respectful of the tranquility. Spoilt it a bit but not the campsites fault.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Good location, owner was responsive to emails and calls

Disliked No drinking water and this was not made clear prior to booking. The toilets were also not great quality and smelt horrendous. Thought that overall it was very over priced for what it offered

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: sorry you felt this way .it says no drinking water on pitchup, the toilets are never horrendous depends how people leave toilets there’s only so much cleaning you can do. Maybe next time check what the campsites offer before making a booking. Thanks katie

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Location only 20 mins walk to Castleton town centre with pubs restaurants and small shops .. right in the middle of great walks and caves

Disliked Would be better if there was lighting along the access road ... would benefit from showers adding to the facilities ... especially with the changeable weather.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The location is beautiful and you can access Mam Tour from the campsite. Toilets are clean and nice to use, and I found the addition of an honesty box really thoughtful!

Disliked The field is not flat, so finding a decent spot to camp is tricky. Massive holes in the field which is not signposted so watch where you drive your car!!

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Friendly host
Clean field
Fair location if you want isolation from Castleton and quiet, scenic views
Free roaming sheep

Disliked Lack of drinking water (yes it is listed but it can be an inconvenience and would be a nice touch)

No showers, there’s a water tap but from the review I think many would rather a shower than the tap. Likely to be inclined to stay longer if there was a shower facility.

Lack of water pressure in the toilet so could not be flushed or hands couldn’t be washed at times. The toilets are porta-loos.

Smaller field than anticipated from images.
Not all even ground so get to the site early especially if fully booked.

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked Very picturesque setting. Surrounded by hills and mountains, very peaceful and quiet apart from the occasional sheep calling which adds to the experience. Lady owner was very friendly and made periodic checks around the fields. Toilets were clean and adequate. We will be back!

Unpowered grass campervan site

Liked Absolutely stunning campsite! The views are spectacular. Nice spacious pitches & can pitch up where you like. We have camped all over the Peak District & can honestly say this is our favourite place to camp, location is ideal as Castleton town centre is approx 20 min walk through the fields. Also the site is at the foot of Mam Torr so great for an early morning hike. Owner is fab, really welcoming. Toilets & washing up sink on site, very clean. Honesty box full of goodies. If you love relaxing in a field with breathtaking views this is the place to come.

Local attractions

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
