Caravan lending on the rise

Aug 26 2012 Posted by Laura Canning

We already know that camping and ‘staycations’ are on the rise, with more and more people opting to holiday at home this year. But now savvy holidaymakers have been asking caravan owners to lend out their vans, with over half of owners saying they’ve seen a rise this year in people asking to borrow their caravans.

Many people opting for a UK break do it to save costs, which has led to a rise in caravan holidays – even by those who don’t own a caravan.

A survey of 1,028 caravan owners by Saga Caravan Insurance found that 44 per cent have lent their caravan out, with a further 31 per cent saying they would consider doing so. They’re most likely to lend to friends (80 per cent), parents (59 per cent) and siblings (49 per cent). 6 per cent even say they’d consider lending their caravan to a complete stranger.

‘Caravanners do appear to be a generous bunch,’ noted Saga Services chief executive Roger Ramsden. However, the generosity seems to taper off with older caravanners, with substantially less people in the over-50s group saying they’d be willing to share.

55 per cent of over-50s say they would not lend their caravans to anyone, and just 12 per cent would let a neighbour use their caravan, compared to 24 per cent of under-50s.
