Romantic walks through the vineyards and long evenings spent sampling home-grown wines under starry skies… A holiday as a guest of a wine estate sure sounds like bliss. And at Domaine du Siestou, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of south-western France, you can really get a feel for the winemaking lifestyle. Run by the Brunel family, the peaceful site consists of two safari lodges (named Grenache and Syrah, wines that form part of the estate’s offerings); they sit on the edge of a small pine forest about four kilometres south of the village of Rieux-Minervois (five minutes’ drive, or a 15-minute bike ride – and bicycles are available for hire on site). Each lodge comes with a kitchenette (featuring oven, stove, refrigerator and coffee maker) and a bathroom, plus welcome touches like air conditioning, a parking space and expansive views over the vineyards (and, on a clear day, as far as the Pyrenees). Not forgetting a private four-person hot tub on the terrace. Sipping wine under the stars while having a good soak – sounds like a triple win. During the day, you might choose to relax in the communal outdoor pool (the owners keep a few inflatables for young guests, who also get to play on a trampoline) or to learn the secrets of wine production in the vineyard or the winery. More active types might wish to explore the local area, perhaps pushing as far as the Montagne Noire (45 minutes), with its hiking trails and swimming lakes, such as Laprade Basse (45 minutes), with a well-equipped watersports centre.

Lugares de interés

The Cité de Carcassonne (half an hour’s drive), on the outskirts of the city of the same name, is a hilltop citadel with well-preserved turrets and ramparts from where it’s possible to admire views of the Pyrenees. In town, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Carcassonne displays porcelain and decorative objects alongside Flemish paintings. The bear claw marks on the wall of one of the chambers of the Grotte de Limousis (half an hour) might fire up the kids’ imagination (as might the ancient bones and prehistoric tools). There are also underground clear-water lakes and distinctive rock formations. Stay underground by visiting the Roman Granary Museum of Narbonne (50 minutes), a series of storage galleries dating from the first century BC. There are Roman artefacts at the Narbo Via Museum, or you can learn about French chansonnier Charles Trenet in the house where he was born, now complete with a karaoke machine playing his best-known hits.
