Isle of Rum Campsite

Me gustó: Great location on the shore, between the ferry and the shop. Lovely view. Provision of chairs and cooking stands was appreciated, also a shelter with solar USB charger and binoculars. I didn't try the showers, but the compost toilets were as good as they can be. The island is a great place to visit for nature and hiking.

No me gustó: It would be great if you could cover some of the gaps on the shelter with mesh to keep midges out!

Me gustó: Everything! This was my second visit in around six weeks, and when I posted my earlier review, I complained about the ice-cold showers. The issue has been fixed, and the showers -- or at least the one I used -- are now deliciously warm. There are also new composting toilets which are much closer to the campsite -- no more need to stumble that 300m in the middle of the night. Everything you could want in a campsite -- ability to charge devices, aforementioned showers and toilets, bbq pits, chairs and tables, a wee shelter that's just, well, handy, a drying line (pegs included), and views to die for. Helpful and friendly staff in the bunkhouse to answer any questions. Located mid-way between ferry pier and general store (~10min walk to each).

Me gustó: Everything about the site and amenities are great. The couple who manage the site are helpful in the extreme and we were made to feel very welcome. Can’t wait to get back.

Me gustó: The new composting toilets and the cooking area.

No me gustó: The rubbish situation.
Nobody came down to empty the bins for three days.
I did it myself.
I know the rule of disposing of rubbish myself on the island.
Sadly most visitors don’t.
Two years running I’ve been trying to tell people that they should take their rubbish to the skip on the pier.
There’s no sign or explanation about this in the hut.

Me gustó: Location

No me gustó: Not much space to pitch, quite humid ground, no control of space, people.. It's better too wild camp than use the campsite.

Me gustó: The views and the constant breeze that kept the midgies away! Only a short walk from the ferry port and the staff in the bunkhouse were super friendly and helpful. The shop on the island, just a 5 min walk from the campsite, was really well stocked so we felt we were definitely not going to go hungry (or thirsty!)

Sawdust toilets were well maintained and cleaned regularly.

No me gustó: There were a few pitches unusable due to boggy terrain!

Me gustó: Stunning views over to the sea.
Shelter hut available to sit, eat your meals and watch birds (binoculars available).
Cooking tables and wooden chairs availabe for use (free-of-charge).
The two compost toilets are not ideal, but those were well kept and clean.
Warm water in the shower.
Extremely friendly staff.

No me gustó: Some people statying at the campsite were very noisy and talked out loud until well after midnight, disrupting everyone's sleep.
The staff don't check whether you have a booking, which means anyone can turn up and pitch a tent for free. That might explain why it was so busy, with tents less than 2 meters apart from each other.
Showers are a bit far from the pitch.
There is only one normal toilet (non-compost), next to the showers. However, it was very smelly and there was a big puddle of water at the entrance formed by a leak coming from the toilet itself (quite disgusting).

Me gustó: We really liked the settling, friendly staff and the handy compost loo.
