Rainbow Retreat

Me gustó Great location , close to Exeter but with a feeling of being totally out of the way. We stayed monday - Friday as a family of 5 , with childeren aged 5 and 10. The road to the parking is rocky, but no major issue, short walk from the carpark to the safari tent we stayed in. We'll equipped with everything you need , cooker, water container , seating. Kids loved the hammocks and being able to explore the woods. Clean and tidy when we arrived, although the compost able toilets did need seeing to. Once I informed the hosts they got on that and apologised , however this wasn't a massive issue as they were very responsive. The hosts daughter had left a ball in the area and they said our boy could play with it too, they also apologised to the kids for the toilet with sweets which went down well and was very generous. We like the wheelbarrows to take things to the tent. Although we had the place to ourselves for a couple of nights , when other campers joined we barely saw them and didnt feel like we were on top.of anyone. We also had family local who came to see us , which the hosts welcomed. This was very nice for us. It is a back to basics site with lovely showers, which is friendly and welcoming and a reasonable price. We would stay here again ! Thank you for having us.

No me gustó No real dislikes as such, however minor things - the compostable toilets are slightly difficult for smaller bums , but they did manage ok.
I think it would be better with clearer signage outfront as we drove past the first time. The sign for rainbow retreat was facing the other side of the road rather than being visible driving up or down the road. There is a great communal kitchen with a pizza overn, however the handle on the pan for the pizza oven detached and we lost a pizza!!! All small things , but no reason not to go back!!!

Me gustó The location and pitches were excellent, so peaceful and well maintained! Communication with the host was also fast and very helpful.

Me gustó You can see how much care and attention that Luke and his family have put into making it a beautiful and welcoming family-friendly site. The showers are clean and the compost toilets emptied regularly. Easy to use and instructions provided, it was our first time using them but it was fine! The communal kitchen area is awesome - Beautiful views of the forest from there, lots of seating and loved the little nature ID cards.
We were very grateful to have a shaded plot for our tent after a fair few days in the sun at other sites.
A wheelbarrow was provided so we could move our stuff to and from the car parking area (walk to site is only about a minute or two walk)

Nice and easy drive into Exeter from here

Me gustó Really liked the location. Liked how different pitches were set out. I was fortunate that not many were present during my time, albeit a few arrived the following day. Even then, I felt secluded enough and had a relaxing time. Loved that the cows in the adjoining fields came over several times to stare at my woodland cooking 🤣.

I met one of the owners, who was very friendly, approachable and offered help if I needed.

Toilets were simple to use and showering facilities were decent.

I would recommend this place.

No me gustó Signage for the entrance could’ve been better given it’s on a country road, but that’s a minor issue in reality.

Me gustó I enjoy my stay it was just somewhere to sleep which I did i loved waking up to birds song and cows the owners were very helpful one of their children helped me down the slopes with my tent.

Me gustó I joked with the owner, that with the seclusion, tranquility, and the scattered always evolving amenities, if the there was a zombie apocalypse next week, I would make my way back here pronto.

The arrival can be a bit confusing (there is some renovation going on at the top of the hill), but I sent the hosts a text when we'd arrive and Sammie met us to point us down the hill to the car park. She and her husband were happy to show us to our camp, then the facilities that are all dotted around a long track winding down the hill. They've put this together over the last three years and not only does it look great, they want to see it grow, and seem to be adding or making changes daily.

The yurt is fully fitted. I brought the usual camping supplies just in case, but we could have just brought clothes and toiletires. There was even a few foody things, condiments, oil, and plenty of cutlery stuff like that. Stuff you wouldn't even get if you stayed in a caravan. It gets bloody hot in there once the sun hits it, which it will as there's a lovely clear, wide view of the valley to the south. During the night, the temperature drops like a rock, though the internal wood burner would help.

There isn't much in the way of activities for kids exept wandering the woods, which my boy did a lot and loved. Other than that we relaxed and prepared breakfast and tea in the little clearing by the yurt overlooking the valley, watching the horses in the field yonder do their thing. I would mention to watch your kids as there are several steep drops or embankments into the thickets and brambles, but the hosts own kid seems happy and safe bouncing around.

While I think other reviews mentioned bad mobile signal, we use 5g and had plenty.

Other than that, this is a safe, welcoming, woody camp site that seems to be ever evolving, and I'd love to revisit in a year.

Oh, and if you don't know how to use a composting toilet, say so (the hosts were kind enough to ask, but not our first rodeo). At least one other guest seemed too ashamed to do so, and it makes things worse for other campers. Maybe a kids-proportioned toilet would help?

Me gustó We absolutely loved our stay at Rainbow Retreat. As a family-run campsite, the owners were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help with anything we needed. Their personal touch really made a difference and created a warm, relaxed atmosphere throughout our stay. We felt genuinely valued as guests and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Me gustó Loved the beautiful setting, giant trees, super friendly hosts, secluded pitches and proximity to Exeter! It felt like you were in the middle of nowhere.
