Forest with lovely open clearings of the sky

The name and logo are particularly colourful at Rainbow Retreat, but really there's one colour that stands out above all others at this Devon site… and that colour is green. That goes for both the setting – within 7.5 acres of gorgeous woodland – and the supremely eco-conscious approach that aims to preserve that environment for years to come. In fact, if you stay here you’ll not only be helping to maintain the woodland but also contributing to expanding it, as there’s a policy of planting a tree for each booking made. That’s just one small part of the eco approach at this Greener Camping Club site – around the site you’ll also spot clearly marked recycling areas, compost toilets and off-grid showers with environmentally friendly toiletries provided. The reasons behind wanting to preserve this environment are sure to become clear during your time on site – you’ll be fully immersed in peaceful nature here, with the sound of birdsong and the scents of the forest to soak up as you wander through the woods (or hang out in one of the hammocks strung between the trees). Alfresco cooking is usually part of the plan for guests here – and that’s been made easy by the addition of a communal sheltered kitchen area (with space for eating, sitting and relaxing as well as cooking) and a firepit and barbecue (with logs available to buy on site). All of this sounds like it should be in the middle of nowhere, right? In fact, Rainbow Retreat is anything but – it’s actually only a 10-minute from the centre of Exeter, putting the mainline station within easy reach, along with a whole lot of shops, attractions and places to eat.

Yourte Forager's Nook 1 chambre

A aimé I joked with the owner, that with the seclusion, tranquility, and the scattered always evolving amenities, if the there was a zombie apocalypse next week, I would make my way back here pronto.

The arrival can be a bit confusing (there is some renovation going on at the top of the hill), but I sent the hosts a text when we'd arrive and Sammie met us to point us down the hill to the car park. She and her husband were happy to show us to our camp, then the facilities that are all dotted around a long track winding down the hill. They've put this together over the last three years and not only does it look great, they want to see it grow, and seem to be adding or making changes daily.

The yurt is fully fitted. I brought the usual camping supplies just in case, but we could have just brought clothes and toiletires. There was even a few foody things, condiments, oil, and plenty of cutlery stuff like that. Stuff you wouldn't even get if you stayed in a caravan. It gets bloody hot in there once the sun hits it, which it will as there's a lovely clear, wide view of the valley to the south. During the night, the temperature drops like a rock, though the internal wood burner would help.

There isn't much in the way of activities for kids exept wandering the woods, which my boy did a lot and loved. Other than that we relaxed and prepared breakfast and tea in the little clearing by the yurt overlooking the valley, watching the horses in the field yonder do their thing. I would mention to watch your kids as there are several steep drops or embankments into the thickets and brambles, but the hosts own kid seems happy and safe bouncing around.

While I think other reviews mentioned bad mobile signal, we use 5g and had plenty.

Other than that, this is a safe, welcoming, woody camp site that seems to be ever evolving, and I'd love to revisit in a year.

Oh, and if you don't know how to use a composting toilet, say so (the hosts were kind enough to ask, but not our first rodeo). At least one other guest seemed too ashamed to do so, and it makes things worse for other campers. Maybe a kids-proportioned toilet would help?

A aimé Lovely yurt and warmed up quickly once you get the log burner lit. Close to exeter. Was visiting whilst daughter attended a course in the city. Was unnervingly quiet apart from all the bird song. Felt safe for son to roam safely to kitchen toilet etc

A aimé Great setting, lovely wild camp vibes and very peaceful location. Owned by a lovely family who said they’re also making improvements so would come back again.

N'a pas aimé Bit of a walk from the carpark but worth it for having no cars around and being in such a lovely place. Facilities basic but got all you need.

Yourte Forager's Nook 1 chambre

A aimé Tucked gently into a quiet stretch of woodland, this place felt like stepping into a slower, kinder rhythm of life. From the moment we arrived, there was a sense of calm and care that stayed with us throughout our visit. The setting is truly beautiful, surrounded by trees, birdsong, and the subtle sounds of the forest, it offered a rare feeling of being both held by nature and completely at ease.
The yurt itself was wonderfully maintained: warm, clean, and thoughtfully prepared. The log fire was a particular highlight, crackling gently in the evening and filling the space with a deep, comforting warmth. As night fell, the experience became almost magical. We heard foxes calling in the distance, the soft presence of owls, and the quiet movements of the woodland coming alive after dark. It felt immersive and grounding, yet never unsettling, simply nature being nature.
The hosts were exceptional. Their communication was clear, friendly, and reassuring from start to finish, and their attentiveness struck a perfect balance: always available when needed, yet allowing complete privacy and space to relax. It was obvious they care deeply about both the land and the experience they offer to guests.
Sleep came easily and deeply. Wrapped in the stillness of the woods, with fresh air and the gentle afterglow of the fire, it was one of the most restful nights we’ve had in a long time. There was no rush, no noise, no distractions, just quiet, warmth, and the feeling of being exactly where you’re meant to be.
This is a place for anyone seeking reconnection, with nature, with themselves, or simply with peace. Whether you’re looking to unwind, reflect, or just enjoy the beauty of a well-crafted woodland retreat, this stay offers something genuinely special. We left feeling restored, grateful, and already wishing to return.

Tente safari The Woodland Hideout 2 chambres

A aimé We absolutely loved our stay at Rainbow Retreat! The cabin was spacious, cosy, and had everything we needed – the shower was great too. It’s in such a convenient location, only about 10 minutes from shops, museums, and other activities, but still felt so peaceful and relaxing.

The view was stunning, and one of our favourite memories was listening to the rain while watching a movie – so cosy! Luke was incredibly helpful and approachable, nothing was ever too much trouble. He and his wife are doing a fantastic job running the place.

We honestly can’t think of anything to dislike. We’ll definitely be returning again!

N'a pas aimé That we didn’t stay LONGER

Attractions à proximité

If you're keen to see more of this stunning countryside, a good place to get out for a hike is Dartmoor National Park, a little way west of the site. Some of its top spots – including Canonteign Falls and Blackingstone Rock – are about 25 minutes’ drive away, with Haytor Rocks, Castle Drogo and Fingle Bridge not much further. Alternatively, go for real contrast and get some city time in – Exeter (10 minutes' drive) has all sorts, including the cathedral, the catacombs and the House That Moved. Adrenaline activities could be part of the plan too, with outings to Crealy Theme Park (20 minutes) or Wildwood Devon (half an hour), home to climbing walls and a 40-metre zipline as well as an excellent animal park. And of course this is Devon, so you're never far from the coast – options near to Rainbow Retreat include Dawlish Warren, Exmouth and Teignmouth, all within a half-hour drive.
