For a trip back in time, try the car-free village of Clovelly (20 minutes' drive), where the only traffic jams are caused by the village's donkeys. Those looking for sandy times and surfing, meanwhile, should head to Westward Ho! (30 minutes) or Bude (20 minutes). For local history, head to Hawker's Hut on the coast path (about 10 minutes' drive): the National Trust's smallest property, this seaside shack was built by an eccentric clergyman in the mid 19th century. At the other end of the scale, the sprawling stately parkland at Dunsland (30 minutes) is a splendid spot for regal walks and picnics. For medieval days out, make tracks for Tintagel (40 minutes), whose castle and old post office draw visitors from far and wide.
