Bring your best hiking boots along, because there are loads of great trails to try out around here. Adventurous sorts can scale Skiddaw (20 minutes’ drive) or Blencathra (half an hour) or look out for some of the less well known wainwrights and fells like Binsey (10 minutes) or Longlands Fell (15 minutes). For something a little easier, take a walk on the Threlkeld Railway Path (25 minutes), wander by a lake – perhaps Bassenthwaite (10 minutes) or Derwentwater (25 minutes) – or check out Aira Force waterfall (40 minutes), by the banks of Ullswater. Fancy dipping into the area’s history too? Head to Honister Slate Mine (45 minutes) or Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum (half an hour) or meander around the grounds of Mirehouse & Gardens (15 minutes). Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) is a nice place to see some exotic beasts, and Keswick (20 minutes) has some fun attractions in the Derwent Pencil Museum, Puzzling Place and Theatre by the Lake.
