Up for adding to your personal bragging list (hiked the highest mountain in England, cycled the steepest pass, taken a dip in the deepest lake)? Then consider a one or two-night stay at the scenic parking spaces for motorhome and campervans behind the Woolpack Inn near Holmrock in Cumbria. Offering what they call 'off-road overnight parking', the site has access to only basic toilet and shower facilities behind the inn. Staying here (please note, there’s no electric hook-up) puts you in prime position for doing all the above (and plenty more besides). The Woolpack Inn is five minutes’ walk from the Eskdale climbing route up Scafell Pike, and at the foot of steep, winding cycle route up Hardknott Pass in the peaceful Eskdale Valley – and Wastwater (25 minutes’ drive) is England’s deepest lake for all you intrepid wild swimmers. And if you’re just not that into outdoor activity, no worries either. This site is surrounded by fells and craggy peaks; it’s a spectacular place in which to relax, unwind and enjoy the Lake District landscapes. Even better, the grass pitches are neatly manicured, separated by hedges for extra privacy and – this is the best bit – adjacent to the historic, whitewashed Woolpack Inn, well-known hereabouts for its locally sourced and home-cooked dishes, real Cumbrian ales and properly warm welcome. However, if you’re not feeling wildly sociable, there’s a pizza-and-beer delivery service right to the door of your vehicle too.

Parcela de gravilla sin electricidad para autocaravana

Me gustó: Couldn't get to it !!!!! Coming from Ambleside the road in to it is not suitable for campers, any thing towed or wide vehicles. its to steep and narrow. Tried to drive around to access from somewhere else but just kept getting back to the same point. Even the locals said they only do the route in a small car!! Didn't read anything about that on their website. Had to give up in the end.

Me gustó: The pitches are nice, tucked away and quiet. Lovely area with nice walks. Great pub with fantastic atmosphere, dog friendly with decent food.

No me gustó: Pricey. The facilities aren’t great, basically a toilet in a shed. I’d be fine with this if the pitch wasn’t so expensive.

Me gustó: Very nice place very easy to get to the staff were great and very helpful all the time . The food was very nice and had a beautiful view to wake up to.

No me gustó: Need a new lock on the shower as took few minutes to open with the code was like playing the lottery to see if I’d win to open it .

Me gustó: The location was absolutely stunning and was easily accessible to some decent hikes - we went up to Scafell. The camping field was level and the ground soft. The facilities were mostly very good with lovely hot showers. The pie of the day at the Inn was gorg!

No me gustó: The washing up area was a little rustic but did the job!

Me gustó: The setting is lovely and the pub food was very good.

No me gustó: The site is very basic including the toilets, showers and washing up facilities. Not great value for money. Although the food was good and the staff very helpful, there just weren’t enough of them and so service was very slow. We waited at least an hour for our meal.

Me gustó: The pub is great with good food and drinks. Friendly staff. Good location for hardknott and surrounds.

No me gustó: The camping area needs more attention. There was detritus including broken beer bottles, and tent pegs. The grass is long and rough. It is not "neatly manicured" as advertised.

Me gustó: Myself, son & Labrador “Dobby” stayed recently after climbing scarfell pike. We arrived and friendly staff soon gave us the location of the pitch. The front garden was amazing in the sun, and the first pint was much needed,Pizzas chips etc served when main kitchen is temporarily closed between 1500-1700 I think. I had the steak which was nice then we stayed and played few games of pool with my son. Closer pitches to the building can pick up Wi-Fi. Dogs very much welcome .

No me gustó: Toilets & shower

Direcciones de ruta

Do not use satnav; it takes cars over the very steep Hardknott Pass, which is not suitable for large vehicles. DIRECTIONS Directions from the South Proceed North on the M6 motorway, leaving at Junction 36. Turn Left at the top of the slip road onto the A590 dual carriageway, and stay on this road for 3 miles, before turning Left onto a slip road signed A590 Barrow. Turn Left at the roundabout at the bottom of the slip road onto the A590. After 6 miles of mostly Dual Carriageway (beware of the speed camera), you will approach a roundabout which you need to turn right at (signed A590 Barrow and Newby Bridge). Proceed along this road for approximately 11 miles before coming to a right hand turn (at a place called Greenodd) signed A5092 (A595) Workington and Whitehaven. Carry on along this road for approximately 11.5 miles until you reach the Duddon Bridge with (permanent) Traffic Lights – turn right signed Ulpha and Seathwaite. At this point the roads get (a lot) narrower! 3.7 miles later turn left (signed Eskdale and Whitehaven) just 300yds after a mini Post Office. Up the “short, sharp, shock” hill and over the hills for 6.5 miles. When you reach the King George IV pub, turn right – signed Boot and Eskdale. Follow the road for approximately three miles a you will see the Woolpack Inn on your left, park up and make you self know at the bar and we’ll check you in. Unless you know the roads around here very well, we would recommend that you do not come via Ambleside and Hardknott & Wrynose Passes. These are some of England’s most outrageous roads, but SatNavs do not understand this! Directions from the North Leave (or pass over) the M6 motorway at Junction 40. Take the A66 signed Cockermouth and follow this road for 29.4 miles until you reach Cockermouth (you will have gone “straight on” at 2 roundabouts). When you reach the roundabout at Cockermouth, take the first exit signed A5086 Egremont. Proceed along this road for 14.8 miles until you reach a roundabout at Egremont. Take the first exit – signed A595 Barrow – and proceed along this road for 10.5 miles (having gone “straight on” at the next 3 roundabouts). Just after the petrol station on your right (last petrol before us), turn left signed Santon Bridge and Eskdale Green. At this point the road gets (a lot) narrower! Proceed along this road for 1.6 miles, and turn right (signed Eskdale Green) on to an even narrower road. At the end of this road (1.8 miles), turn right and pass through Eskdale Green, then turn left at the King George IV pub sign post Boot and Eskdale.

Lugares de interés

As well as hiking up Scafell Pike, walks for all abilities start straight from the site, while cyclists who’ve scaled Hardknott Pass can try sections of the Coast to Coast Cycle Ride from St Bees (40 minutes’ drive). If you’re keen to introduce the kids to water-based sports safely, head on down to West Lakes Adventure (five minutes’ walk) for paddleboarding lessons, canyoning and rock climbing along the River Boot. If only the beach will do, Seascale (half an hour’s drive) has seemingly endless sand as well as lots of little rock pools for youngsters to poke around in. Drigg Beach (25 minutes) is the spot for bracing walks along the dunes, and if you’re feeling adventurous, climb down to rocky Fleswick Bay (45 minutes) – chances are you’ll have the beach to yourselves. If you’re all worn out after endless running around outside, take the vintage Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway from Dalegarth Station (20 minutes’ walk) to see the western Lake District’s lakes, fells and mountains from the comfort of your steam-train carriage.
